Forums - Sony - How important is Killzone 2 to the PS3?

It is important in the way that proves the superior graphical power of the PS3 and that really impressive things can be done. God of War III will go further though.

Anyway, it's another impressive title for the PS3's game library.

Play my LittleBigPlanet level: Mystic Runner. Thanks!

@Onyx - That second paragraph had nothing to do with you. Just going off my own rant.

The only thing that had to do with you was the fact you said copycats are a poor man version which I dont completely find true. It seemed you are against the idea of copying while im not.

Again, I'm talking about it in terms of a sales perspective. They are percieved to be a poor man's version and that is why they don't sell as well. Nowhere in this entire topic did I put my personal feelings as a gamer into any of my writing.

I think most people are on the money.

- the game will shift some consoles in the week it releases but it won't have a huge impact on console sales because of the PS3's high price point.
- It is an extremely important game to showcase what the ps3 is capable of.
- It hopefully adds another AAA game to the ps3 software library, and relatedly;
- It gives the ps3 its own AAA exclusive shooter game.
- Also, hopefully it establishes the killzone 2 brand as a quality franchise. GG have now built the engine and have already stated they can get more out if, so hopefully if killzone 2 is a commercial success (practically a forgone conclusion already) then we can expect (a) more iterations and (b) because alot the groundwork has already been laid out the future iterations will likely be more profitable and perhaps shift more consoles given the ps3 has a lower price point.

sorry double post.

A console only really needs one top flagship FPS. What Microsoft appears to be doing with Gears and Halo is to try to make it two, so they can have two titles so they have a new game coming out every year in the 3D shooter realm (FPS and TPS). With the case of Sony, they really only need one. That can be Resistance or Killzone. Apparently Resistance has been rejected for the flagship name, based on comments here, so maybe Killzone can fit into the mix. Well, Socom used to fit into this also, and was likely Sony's flagship FPS. However, the word now is that Socom was wrecked by Sony, so maybe Killzone can jump in.

Again, I say a console maker needs really only one in each genre, the way Sony has Gran Turismo (for driving games). Apparently Microsoft again in another niche wants to go for to. Project Gotham has been turned into the arcade offering, while Forza appears to be more on the sim side.

Having a flagship title in every genre helps keep the console owner happen, and discourages them from defecting. I would take Microsoft wants Ninja Blade to go after God of War.

As richardhutnik said Sony want a flagship shooter for the PS3, Killzone 2 will be the game. MS have two monsters in Halo and Gears, Sony do not have a single one however this is where the differences between the demographic of 360 and PS3 owners come into play.

Sony's flaghip game is GT, Sony do not need Killzone 2 to be as big as Halo because they have a bigger franchise already. Killzone 2 will sell nicely, I say 3 million if Sony do their trademark shitty advertising. Another one is MAG, I am willing to be my dentistry degree that the name of that game will be SOCOM: ???? to get huge sales for that game, shove that name into the title and Sony have themselves a big seller.

This is where I truly feel sorry for Naughty Dog, Guerrilla, Insomniac etc, MS and Nintendo would make those into huge sellers but Sony? Nope

I believe each console maker needs at least one flagship in each major genre customers buy games in. It is preferred the flagship be the lead flagship for a genre on a particular console, the way Gran Turismo and Halo are (and Mario is in platformers). However, if they can get more, they take it. I believe that is why Killzone is important, and why Sony had hopes Resistance would become it, with KZ2 being a follow up they were unsure of, but betting on. At least that appears to be the buzz.

In regards to Socom, it would be nice if that was a flagship, but apparently the game has gotten bad reviews, and now the FPS that is being talked up now by Sony fans, on forums like this, is KZ2. Even Warhawk doesn't have the same level of buzz. It is possible MAG will supplant Warhawk though. Need to see how it pans out.

Now excuse me as I go play some games so I can get Facebreaker out of my sig below.
