Forums - Gaming - Which control stick layout do you prefer?

Southpaw (I'm right-handed tho) + inverted XY-axes in FPS, inverted Y-axis in TPS. Used to play like this since GE007 on N64.

But here's a problem, modern FPSs use face buttons in action, so I need to stop moving->peform action (jump for example)->put my thumb on right stick again to move further - this's rather disturbing. Sometimes I need to move right stick and press face button simultaneously, which is very uncomfortable. The better way to resolve this situation is to map those action buttons on d-pad instead of face buttons (for southpaw configuration), but in most FPSs there're no option like this.

P.S.: I wonder, why there still no trackball instead of this stupid right stick on modern gamepads? Little effort - great increase in accuracy in console shooters, almost like mouse, no need in motion controls.

You play totally backwards.

And why the hell do you want a trackball, that would be horrid..... You couldn't use it for moving forward/back or strafing, because you need continuous use of that (and would have to be scrolling it round and round) similarly it would just be awkward for turning because in the heat of it you sometimes need to turn 360 degrees or more, which would involve scrolling it like with moving.

So unless you intend to have a trackball which is set up as if it re-centres itself when you let go, and thus if you touch it and scroll upwards you can hold it there and the character keeps moving forward... but then that is exactly the same as a controler stick.

@TWRoO

I want trackball for aiming obviously.

i use the one where the mouse is where the gun points and w is forward

oh wait, consoles

i use the one where you point at the screen to shoot

hand on still not right

cant say ive ever played a classic controller console shooter for more then 15 minutes.

Except ith console shooters, you need to use the left/right aim function in order to steer.... so when you are running and doing 90 degree turns you might be alright, but sometimes you need to spin upon the spot, which would be silly with a trackball because you can only go so far before you need to take your thumb off it to scroll further.

Interesting, Never realized the control layout knowledge wasn't as common as I thought.  I will try to find good definitions and post them later.

I use default. Even though I am left handed. Thats coz I got used to the normal settings before I knew about the southpaw.

...your too hardcore for me...

what do those mean?

My thoughts exactly. I guess I'll just go with default.

@TWRoO

The same goes for mouse - no prob, really. You may try trackball (aka one finger mouse, marble mouse etc.) out by yourself. As close to mouse experience as possible without sacrificing gamepad mobility - no need for big flat surface.

Default.

Default with an inverted Y.
