Forums - Microsoft - Possible for Microsoft to make profit on GTAIV DLC

they wont make that back at all, it was purely for ppl to buy 360 version and hope to sell systems.

Don't post your PS3 biased crap if you're not going to back it up. The other people in this thread backed up their points. It would seem that MS will and already is making back the money they spent.

At the time Take-Two made the deal with MS, they were desperate for cash. There were even possible bankruptcy rumors.

Yet, today, America's leaders are reenacting every folly that brought these great powers [Russia, Germany, and Japan] to ruin -- from arrogance and hubris, to assertions of global hegemony, to imperial overstretch, to trumpeting new 'crusades,' to handing out war guarantees to regions and countries where Americans have never fought before. We are piling up the kind of commitments that produced the greatest disasters of the twentieth century.

@ skeeuk and others...

the maths is simple...

Either...

$50m advance.... repayable on sales of the DLC. So they are likely to make all of it back. Their loss??? Interest I guess?

If, as many will say, it wasnt a loan... then they get a slice of the action in royalties...

Either way the end cost will be nowhere near $50m and more importantly (afterall $50m dollars is peanuts to MS) it ensured one reason to buy a ps3 was negated and a reason to buy a 360 was promoted.

Plus... there will be some PS3 owners out there who love GTAIV (yes i know you may find it hard to believe but there will be)... maybe they will now go get a 360... it will happen.. its bound to.

All the sniping comes down to bitchyness and jealousy in varying degrees. the 360 has the DLC, the PS3 doesnt... either live with it or buy a 360... and if you dont care about the DLC then stop going on about it so much.

Thats a good point and also ps2 owners who hav,nt moved yet.

best exclusive investment this gen in my opinion

M$ wanted the DLC for one main reason, to prove that LIVE is where the online gaming and downloadable content is. Hands down M$ has shown that they will do whatever it takes this gen to rise to the top. I salute them for all of their efforts.

you are also forgetting the people who bought the 360 version over PS3 version because of the DLC. And 2.5 million sounds liek a very easy number to reach

I think its a big win for MS. They secured the biggest franchise for the 360 plus they got exclusive DLC that they promoted as a selling point for the system. If they in fact paid $50mil its hard to say they if they can recoup it directly from sales of the DLC. I figure they will need to sell at least 3 million copies of DLC total of both episodes. However it was worthwhile doing it so they can show consumers that they can get the big titles on the 360.

If the $50mill to Take2 was an advance then hell yes it was worth it since they really don't lose anything other than interest.

Either way MS is trying to prove Live to be an experience that you can't get from the PS3 with exclusive DLC for GTA4, Fallout 3, Fable 2 etc.

It'll be interesting to see what happens when TL&TD launches, but it'll be relatively easy for MS to make a profit on the content.

I'd imagine that they could always sell it as a boxed game if they needed to.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

We already did the math. It would take 1,250,000 to buy both the packs or 2,500,000 to buy at least one of the packs

Since the $50 million was supposedly just a loan, it doesn't take much to make a profit. All that Microsoft lost was the interest.
