Forums - General - So... My brother just quit university, forever.

Hey... I'm not feeling good hearing about this news just now. Hey, there was one day left for me before the weekend, and I still have 6 hours of class tomorrow. I won't be able to concentrate, I know I won't... And I'm not sure if I want to go back home for the weekend (I'm at the college residence right now).

I knew it would happen eventually, because the guy was seriously lacking one thing: concentration and motivation. All he had in mind was girls it seems, or something like "I want someone to care about me" and stuff like that. Oh, and he liked to play with his guitar and Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix. >_>

I have to say, I felt pity for him. He miserably failed his first term, with notes under 50% in all of his subjects... but I can't really blame him. The place he stayed near the university is a fucking prison. He lives with 4 random people, and they're "study geeks" and not sociable at all. He was alone every single night, and he started to stay very late at the university for quite some time now just because of that. Man... What a life!

But still, now, he's not only hurting himself, he's hurting me too as well! We were supposed to go rent an apartment with two of my other friends for the next semester, but I guess it won't happen now since there's no point if he's quitting everything. My dad did everything for us, me and my brother. He's even "exiling" himself from the whole family just so he can get money for our studies supervising the building of all new hydroelectric generating stations up in the north of Quebec (they're plants that produce electric power by using water to propel the turbines... pretty complicated stuff some Quebeckers came up with). My brother and I don't even have to work! It's an enormous stress he's removing from us. Oh man... I wouldn't want to be in his shoes right now... What an idiot for putting so much trust into us, he must think right now! Was he trying to hard? Did he make our lives too easy?

I'm at the college residence right now, and my bro is at home. He was THIS close to start his own life, and I don't want to walk in his shadow all my life. I know my dad is going to put his last flame on me, and that's a burden I might not be able to hold. All I want to do is punch my bro in the fricking face.

Why can't your brother concentrate? Unless he has a useful passion [i.e. MAD guitar skills or.. NOT SF] he needs school to get anywhere in life. Tell him that unless he's a fucking retard, he can do well in school. Just concentrate.. maybe get him to change residence. Hook him up with a GIRL who studies...

There are tons of valuable skills in this world which don‘t require a university education ... In fact, one of the most successful people I know in real life installs air conditioning systems in large buildings.

The benefit of being young and without responsibilities is that you can easily make the sacrifices necessary to become successful later in life. Personally, if I was to give advice to anyone who had just left university I would tell them that skilled trades (plumber, electrician, bricklayer, etc.) are a very smart direction to move in because we have a growing need for these people being that less and less people have the capacity to do the work on their own.

@ im_sneaky: To be honest, I don't know what he wants to do in life. I've been telling him what you said just now for quite some time.

Girls... Meh, he's not going to see any now that he quit everything. He's just not helping himself at all.

I don't understand what's so hard about isolating yourself for just a few years if it's going to bring greater years ahead of you!

@ HappySqurriel: I know his life is not over... But I'm feeling for my dad, a lot. He didn't want his kids to turn out like most of the other kids people in my family have (long story). He never forced us to do something we didn't like though, so my dad is not the kind you think he might be. He has put a lot of faith in us, because he knew we could do something interesting with our lifes. I'm not saying the job suggestions you offered are mediocre or whatever, it just sucks to see my brother quit just when he has the potential to achieve much more.

If he can't concentrate and get the marks then he shouldn't be there. He should find someone he enjoys and make some moneys from that.

It could be worse. At least its not you in his shoes.

I've had a lot of people in college drop out around me. It can certainly be tough to deal with. A lot of the people I knew had to leave because of mental problems as well, so it was a lot more dramatic and traumatic for everyone.

If college teaches you one thing, its that a lot of people aren't cut out for college for all kinds of different reasons. They should come to law school...we lost two people over the weekend...

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

People drop from my film course like rabbits. Over 70% of them couldn't take it.

I kinda know how you feel, when I found out my brother smoked (I was 10, he was 13) I had that in the back of my mind for like a month.

"I knew it would happen eventually, because the guy was seriously lacking one thing: concentration and motivation."

Thats um....2 things

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD

What's funny is that he was doing very good at first, and then he suddenly stopped trying in the past few years! I'm sure he got bad influence from the people he was with in the residence (I'm in the same room he was in a few years ago right now, surrounded with different people obviously). I have no idea if he's taking drugs behind my back or something... It's not his type to keep things like that from me.

We've been gamers for a long time, and he told me that he was getting less interested in games recently... I thought it was weird. I mean, hobbies are there to occupy you and stuff. He can play his guitar, OK, but stop playing games he used to love before? He needs to remember who he was before, lighten up a bit! It's good to change little by little, but change just because he's now in a big city and he wants to live like "city people" when we used to live in the countryside with no bars and shit? Give me a break.

If only he had more pride. >_>
