Forums - Sales Discussion - xbox 360 dead as a dodo

kars said: Yes, a true winner is not there, but I think the true looser is quite clear. Sony. They were the favorite, but first they were late and more expensive, than the Xbox 360, and then they were even overwhelmed by someone that no one had on their list anymore: Nintendo. THey were so sure, that they cold use their dominating position on the games market to push BluRay, and now this decision did probably cost them their leading position. Without the BluRay drive and the HDMI they would have been much cheaper
I could be wrong but I think that Sony's biggest problem is that they're not taking advantage of opportunities ... I went over to my brother's house to watch the superbowl on his new HDTV ... For me (and I would suspect a large portion of the people watching the Superbowl) this was the first time I had watched a HD signal on a good quality HDTV. Going into the game I anticipated that Sony was going to use this opportunity to show off how pretty their system is; I was expecting some footage of Resistance, and Sony to demonstrate Blu-Ray (even at 1080i/720p it should be pretty impressive). What did we get? Nothing ... Not one comercial ... Sony ignored the largest audience of HD content in the world at a time where they needed a huge boost ...

What MS has done wisely is delay/hold back several key titles - until the mid of this year. That will help the 360 regain momentum once the release hype over the Wii / Ps3 dies down. There will be a serious too/froing between the PS3 / 360 for the next 12-18 months (if not longer) starting soon. I think its going to be one of the most intense/nasty/important battles we have ever "seen" in the games industry. MS is pretty serious about this, and is ready to sacrifice some serious cash to hurt Sony (i.e. win the hardcore section of the market). They do have one significant advantage - since there are already 10mill (approx) 360's out there, cross platform games released on both the 360/PS3 will sell MUCH higher on the 360 (in most cases?). This will give MS some serious ammo - with press releases like "GTA on 360 outsells PS3 by 3:1", etc. The 360 definitely isn't dead - the PS3 isn't dominating - and there is still no real sign of who will "win" this. If the 360 can continue to outsell the Ps3 in the US - expect some worries from Sony. On the other hand, if PS3 global sales can rapidly reach the sales figures for the 360... MS may have to change strategy completely.
M$ seems to be willing to fight for Bills ego. (i.e. trying to go after Ipod, and very unsuccesfully I might add). Long term it is going to be very close this round I think.

Take my statement to aim at NA, and maybe Europe as well. I should also add in exclusive title. Yes, GTA is probably more sought after, but it is going to be on two platforms. So my new statement goes like this "In terms of the console war, in NA and Europe, I think Halo 3 will be the most important game of this year. Maybe even this gen."
heh, ok, throwing out Japan completely I see. Clever. Still, there are mario games, MGS, FF13. I suppose you are right, though. I can't argue that it's really anticipated. However, you can't forget about Japan just because 1 console can't sell there. But, I'm biased, I just don't play many FPSs on consoles due to worse controls, which reminds me... does anyone know a console game that supports keyboard and mouse input? does halo 2 or any others? I'd think that once that is done every "hardcore" gamer would have to use them. I know I remember reading that a PS3 game will support it, especially since the ps3 supports any usb mouse and keyboard. That'll make console FPSs very interesting with people running around with just their controllers still.

The 360 can easily support a USB Mouse/Keyboard. As far as I know, they are in development or even use thus far. However, they are made by 3rd parties and not-MS sanctioned (but are MS sanctioned due to the hardware embargo). Supposedly, they needed the keyboard/mouse due to World of Warcraft on 360, but Blizzard has been negative on that (but at the same time, prasing the 360's online abilities). Who knows. Either way, I believe both PS3 and 360 will have keyboards at some point in the futre that are used/needed alot. We just have to see how soon.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Here on Spain the X360 was at 70K units by the christmas period .It improved its sales thanks to Gears of War in the Christmas period and we should add January and February sales (usually weak ) but I highly doubt it is higher than 120K-130K .For example Nintendo launched and supplied through december some 70K units and sold out so it is totally fair to assume (and Nintendo noted it ) that the Wii with its launch numbers and the very small succesive shipments of december effectively sold as much consoles as the X360 in one year .Now the PS3 will ship here with 100K units and it is already preordered so in one or two supplementary months there will be more PS3 than X360 . As for the Halo arguement I think it will be a great game but I doubt a system seller .Most Halo fans have already bought the machine anticipating it would eventually be a Halo 3 .In Europe Halo isnt that big ,and the same applies to Japan .Besides ,the X360 has a ton of very polished FPS and more on the way as Unreal 3 ,Prey 2 ,Haze (I think this one comes out also in X360 isnt it ?) and many others .....I personally dont see Halo 3 being head and shoulders over Unreal 3 or Gears of War ...specially seeing the footage we have seen right now . In my opinion there are games that sell systems but not to a enourmous degree .This opinion can be counterargued by the DS example where two or three games are pushing the sales since nearly a year (BT ,Nintendogs and Mario are quite old games ,nearly a year old the newest ) but that is another story ,a cheap machine with cheap games and a casual approach .For machines of 400+Live fees and 600 dollars there are few games that individually make you buy the machine ....a concrete game pushes some 40K sales here ,another one 30K plus ,etc .Even Final Fantasy cant manage that much of a push ...if we look at the numbers it sells approximately 2 million per territory .....and most of the buyers already have the machine when the game ships. This can be easily seen in the fast-selling pattern they show (as opposed to Brain Training and Nintendogs for example ) while the hardware sales dont improve dramatically in the launch period .How many people buy the machine to play the game then ?Some dozens of thousands not many more .

IMO, I believe your wrong. According to MS, 50% of the people that own 360s did not own an Xbox. This would show there are most likely alot of Halo fans out there waiting until Nov 1st to buy a 360 + Halo 3. When Halo 2 launched, according to VG Charts, hardware sales went from 242,000 units to OVER 800,000 units in November. That is a very significant jump, as any previous year, the Xbox only did around 500k. Therefore, Halo 3 should get such a jump. Only in the US? Most likely. But between GTAIV and Halo 3, there'll probably be about 1m new adopters for those 2 games alone. The 360 doesn't have a huge killer system-moving game in the US. Worldwide, GoW and LP supposedly moved systems in Europe, and BD in Japan. Thus far even GoW didn't give the 360 a spike (except for maybe December). This shows that there is still pent-up demand for games like Halo 3 and GTAIV. The same thing went for Final Fantasy - when XII launched in Japan, sales went skyrocketing. I believe it managed to triple or quadruple sales for the week. Heck, look at VII, it's what allowed the PS1 to start on it's road to riches in the US as well.

The 360 has no hope in Japan. I really don't think they'll fair too much better in Europe. 12

Dude check the sales. They have sold over 2.3 million in 1 year there, or about a year. they are doing fine there, check your numbers.
