Forums - Sony - Killzone 2 to change Expectations for PS3 Developers?

NJ5 said:

Maybe not, but that would be because they now have a great engine to work from... Not all developers have that luxury, unless Guerilla Games becomes an engine vendor like Epic.

An interesting suggestion. Maybe Sony/GG have more grandiose plans than we know?

It would make sense on a number of levels, probably none more important than the basis that GG allegedly spent $60M of Sony's money to make Killzone 2 (which was originally budgeted at $30M, so I've read). They didn't drop that kind of coin on a one-shot deal.

Licensing their own "next-gen HD" engine could turn a profit, plus gets Sony a lot more willing partners for exclusives.

We should hope that Killzone 2 does not change people's expectations from developers... Not all developers should be expected to spend 4 years making a high-budget game while having some of the best technical engineers working on it. It's just not feasible and it would lead to more pain in the gaming business, and an alienation of the PS3 among developers.

3 years, the fourth year its at most some months.

also uncharted 2 its comming and for many loòking better in less than 2 years time.

No. KZ2 is not the most expensive, I believe that title goes to GTA IV.

FFXIII has probably well surpassed Killzone 2's development costs by this point.

And MGS4 probably cost more as well, since people in Amsterdam are paid roughly ~50% of what people in NA and Japan are.  Also, GG was focusing on Killzone: Liberation during the first ~2 years they were working on Killzone 2, and they only had ~40 developers prior to being aquired by Sony in 2006.

It may have been in devleopment for ~8 months longer, but they had overall less employees, each of which were getting paid (in many cases much) lower salaries.

I don't think Killzone 2 cost as much as people think it did.  Granted it was expensive as hell, but it probably will have cost no more than something like God of War III when all is said and done.  And well less than Gran Turismo 5.

this is the hype it deserves. now just need it on a worldwide level thats off the internet and into the tv's

The only thing it shows is what you can do with a shit load of money.

You wanna have your opinion, then you have to respect different opinions as well.

Think of the things you could do with that Killzone engine! You could make the most Epic Warhammer 40k shooter ever!

and of course alot of dedication mixed with some hard work.

Sony should force GG to outsource their engine to other devs for the PS3.

lol i dont think they would have to force them, maybe just ask them would do.

Let me just say that we look at other games all the time, at my workplace, and KZ2 wows us (although I haven't seen the full game yet). We're not just gonna let that kind of competition slide on by, and pretend it doesn't exist. The bar has been raised, congrats GG and -- en garde!, and all that.

The answer to the OP question is: Yes, and in no small way either.
