Forums - Sony - Killzone 2 to change Expectations for PS3 Developers?

Seeing as 3rd parties arent exclusive they have to got the Lowest common denominator route, so that point is moot. Its the Exclusives that we will see the difference.

I was talking about people's expectations (see the article's title), not what developers will actually do... It's pretty obvious that most developers won't be making KZ2-level graphics on the PS3.

Sony maybe willing to lose money because they have a vested interest in selling systems. Other stidios are not willing to tank tons of money. Other studios want to make money. Not lose it.

Sony's first party will have access to the Engine. Nowadays its mostly first party that are the exclusives. And of course development costs will go down if you use this engine and it will be less time consuming. And also to get that much more outta the Ps3, it will take less and less work as time goes on and developers fully utilise the Ps3 coding and make it more effiecent

The obvious question is: what about 3rd party developers? Aren't development costs already high enough?

Anyway, this is probably not going to be a problem unless a great portion of PS3 owners are graphics whores.

Games don't have to look great to be tons of fun, but doesn't everyone like beautiful things?

This is just the first step in PS3's direction.

Now that a developer has shown graphics that the PS3 can produce. Other developers can show revolutionary game play mixing in amazing graphics.

  • 2010 MUST Haves: WKC, Heavy Rain, GoWIII, Fable III, Mass Effect 2, Bayonetta, Darksiders, FFXIII, Alan Wake, No More Heroes 2, Fragile Dreams: FRotM, Trinity: SoZ, BFBC2.
  • Older Need To Buys: Super Mario Bros. Wii, Mario Kart Wii, Deadspace, Demon's Souls, Uncharted 2.

There is definitely more to list that I want, but that's my main focus there.

Yes and there's nothing wrong with that in principle, but if it changes people's expectations to the point that they wouldn't buy other FPS games with worse graphics, then it's a negative for developers and the PS3.

However I don't expect that to happen.

But as you can see, quite of PS3 exclusives this year are on par or above Killzone 2 graphically ie Heavy Rain, GT5, Uncharted 2, maybe even God of War 3 ( have to see)

Fair enough, I just wanted to ask the question =)

I think ps3 exclusives will be well ahead of anything on the 360 but mulitplatforms will still be fairly even between the two sytems.

Aren't these all 1st/2nd party titles, and also not the same genre as KZ2?

It seems this debate is going around in circles.

It would be a dream come true if every developer got their hands on this engine and could replicate the graphics of KZ2... but we're still seeing some great things from Sony's other teams so I'm not too concerned. Killzone 2, Heavy Rain, God of War 3, Uncharted 2.. they're all going to contribute some of the best technical stuff we've ever seen.

It's all about the game.
