Forums - Sony - PS3 vs 360 CM: Dirt comparison

I downloaded the demo, but haven't played it yet. I'm too busy laying down the best time in GT:HD in the Cappuccino.

Around the Network

Don't forget to mention the PS3 version runs smoother than the 360 version...

Thanks to Blacksaber for the sig!

I'd rather pay more attention to what the developers said instead of a random dude on the Neogaf forums

other than that, comparison pics should be held off till the final version is completed on BOTH consoles.

The developers qoute is open to spin. He only said the PS3 version "looks fantastic" compared to the 360 version which doesn't really mean anything. He didn't say "looks better". Also he said something about "slimmer, leaner" version..which could mean missing trackside detail, hah.

It's hard to tell but they look pretty similar, but most on GAF who have both demos were saying the 360 textures are definitly better (while the PS may run faster), which is funny because a couple here have said the opposite.

As to that guy who asked what tearing was, it's funny but for the longest time I didn't really know what tearing was either. While many on the internet acted like it was a huge deal, which always puzzled me.

But I think I'm starting to get it. It's basically when the frame rate drops below 30 on TV, I think. The TV always outputs 30 or 60 fps, so like if the game is only outputting 25 fps, you get "tearing". The 30/60 thing is why console games seem to always shoot for one or the other.

I'm pretty sure it just looks like quick "line" cutting through the picture. Now that I know what it is, it kind of bothers me more LOL.

It's probably not anything casual gamers, much less your little sister, could even really see or care about. But once you've been trained to look for it, it's annoying.

Here's a good explanation I just found even though it's not related to videogames (it was about DVD's I think)

"Tearing is a display artifact that occurs when images are presented to the screen without regard for the current status of the output circuitry. It occurs because pixels are sent to the screen gradually in book order rather than instantaneously. What happens is that the output DAC reads across the same area of the screen that is bring written to, so the monitor ends up showing a half-updated image. The result is a momentary frame that has half of an old frame and half of a new one, with a clean horizontal split across (the tear). Because the location of the tear varies according to timing, it usually jumps all over the place, which can be distracting."

If you have a 360 I think the easiest way to show yourself tearing is download the Motogp 06 and 07 demos. The 06 one has terrible tearing, particularly when taking a corner, but the 07 one is buttery smooth, so you can see the difference.

Oh I also think, the type of TV you have could affect how you see tearing. Like a year ago I got a 27" LCD HDTV. Things are crystal clear and also maybe because it's LCD, tearing is more noticeable I'm assuming. But I bet if you had a CRT SDTV, it would be a lot harder to spot just because the general screen qaulity is lower.
