Microsoft Considering Sizable Layoffs

According to The Wall Street Journal, Microsoft is considering "significant" layoffs across various corporate divisions. Insiders close to the company did not disclose whether Microsoft's Xbox division will be affected.

Nothing has been set in stone reports The Wall Street Journal, and Microsoft could find alternatives to keep costs down.

If Microsoft goes through with the cuts, they are expected to be announced next week when the company gives its quarterly earnings. According to The Wall Street Journal, the potential job cuts are expected to be far less than the previously rumored 15,000 cuts.

Microsoft declined to comment on these latest layoff rumors.

which one is greenberg?

I wonder what divisions in Microsoft is hurting them. Xbox hut them but not so much that it was a strain on the company, and its a lot better now. I'm guessing its MSN as google keeps gaining marketshare.

Windows and Office have always been the big money makers for Microsoft. Vista is doing poorer that expected at retail, and I expect many large companies are putting off MS server and Office upgrades to save money.

It is not like MS will not make $ billions, it is just not as many billions as they have hoped for.

The EDD division does have the advantage of having Mac Office sales to prop its profits up, and I doubt they will scrap Zune. 360 is doing fine, so EDD should come out relatively fine.

I am not sure how many people work for MSN or on the IE team, but they are getting killed by Google in the search market and IE is fighting a losing war.

Microsoft's earnings are pretty regular as far as I've seen (excluding the entertainment division as we all know). They always make tons of money on Windows/Office, a smaller amount of money on other divisions, and then lose some money on online services and the famous "corporate level activity" which can contain almost anything.

I don't believe these layoffs happen because the company is really hurting, more likely they're taking the opportunity to cut off some fat, while preparing in advance for the economy's continued downturn.

So even the mighty MS aren't recession proof?
