I don't really think there are thousands of other RPG series out there that will prove it isn't a niche genre. Many of them don't sell shit. I just named the ones that seemingly sell the most and are currently very popular. I forgot World of Warcraft though, so that can be added too.

In most games you are playing the role of someone else, or your playing as yourself in an alternate world, so in essence all games are pretty much RPGs
