Forums - Gaming - How much does it cost to produce/manufacture Xbox 360 and Wii?

Since I was the one making the jokes, let me try to be serious and make some guesses.  I looked around and found some late 2006 costs for all of the consoles.  Here is what they used to be:

Wii

Graphic chip $29.60
CPU $13.00
DRAM $7.80
Optical disk drive $31.00
Power supply $11.30
Manufacturing cost $19.50

Cost total $158.30

Estimated Cost Changes Since Late 2006:

The PS3 shed the BC on the motherboard, which reportedly dropped the manunfacturing costs to $690.23.  After undergoing a die shrink on the CPU and GPU, and reduction in the cost of the Blu-Ray components, costs reportedly dropped another 35% at the beginning of 2008 to $448.73.  Let's give PS3 another 10% drop in costs to account for the remainder of 2008, so the PS3 today probably costs about $403.86 to manufacture with the 80 GB hard drive, and probably $25 more for the 160 GB SKU.

Since the XBox360 never shed any features, and never had the Blu-Ray drive, let's give it only a 25% drop in 2007 and another 7.5% drop in 2008, making Xbox360 cost about $224.29 today for the Pro, the Arcade is probably $25 less, and the Elite $25 more.

The Wii never underwent any die shrinks, so it probably changed the least of all 3 consoles.  Let's make a wild guess and say it dropped 7.5% each year.  That would put the Wii at a cool $135.45 today.

Total Boxed Cost and Profit:

The costs I estimate are probably what it takes to just manufacture the console.  The cost of controller, cables, printed materials, bundled games, packaging, shipping, and retailer profit will need to be added to those to get the total cost to make up what's in the retail boxes. Let's add $60-$100 (depending on what's in the box) to each to account for all that.  So here is the total box cost, and profit for each SKU as I think it is today:

PS3 80 GB - Cost $485, Price $400, Loss $85

PS3 160 GB - Cost $520, Price $500, Loss $20

XBox360 Arcade - Cost $260, Price $200, Loss $60

XBox360 Pro - Cost $305, Price $300, Loss $5

XBox360 Elite - Cost $350, Price $400, Proft $50

Wii - Cost $195, Price $250, Proft $55

Oh this source was quite helpfull, thank you! Even though the figures are dated, we can clearly assume that 360 costs less than $300 to manufacture now, given that ps3 costs have gone down from around $800 to $450. Its quite a safe bet to assume that MS is selling the premium and elite model for a premium (generating profit out of the hardware), at least thats for sure for the elite model, while they are making losses from the arcade model. These losses are justified though as they are making around $80 profit from each 120 GB HD, and a smaller figure from the 60 GB model.

@rajendra82:
the estimate about component price drop are a little bit on the conservative side as production process refinement drives IC prices down even when there aren't process shrinks, anyhow the figures are quite close to other estimates I saw around...

I just published an article that addresses the Wii's manufacturing cost.  I used the data from 2006 that was known about the Wii and I used the analyst's assumption from this past April that manufacturing costs for the Wii are down 45%.

You can read it at, http://coffeewithgames.blogspot.com/2009/08/analyzing-cost.html

I think 360 is now making a profit off the elite.
