Forums - Gaming - Is Chess a casual game?

it all depends on the players. me and some friends can get together and play a few rounds of chess just for shits and giggles, maybe play some bughouse. but at the same time (this is when i did play seriously) we can go to tournaments and be serious about it.

chess is both an casual and a hardcore game. it all depends on who is playing it and the intent on them playing casual or hardcore.

lol

There's no such thing as casual/hardcore games. Casual or hardcore is in the way you play games, not the games themselves. If you have seen some Wii Play youtube videos you probably know what I mean.

The same for chess, you can play it casually or hardcore.

Why do game sites call it casual?

Because most game journalists are clinging to the casual/hardcore distinction in order to prop the 360/PS3 up and the Wii down?

Stop with all the bullshit theories. You know how pathetic it makes you (and Nintendo fans as a whole) look?

Nevermind, that quote don't need to live on

I don't care if I look pathetic or not, I care whether I'm right or not.

Is is not true that the casual/hardcore distinction is being much more talked about this gen than the last? Is it not true that most of the gaming media acts as if 360/PS3 is where you want to be for "hardcore" experiences and Wii for "casual"?

Yes, and it's true, isn't it? Not saying there aren't any hardcore games on Wii or that there aren't any casual games on the other consoles, but that's pretty much it, yeah...

PC + Wii owners unite.  Our last-gen dying platforms have access to nearly every 90+ rated game this gen.  Building a PC that visually outperforms PS360 is cheap and easy.    Oct 7th 2010 predictions (made Dec 17th '08)

Gamers in general don't agree, not when the Wii is stealing market share from these two consoles, making them sell slower than the consoles of the previous generation. Unless you think the market of hardcore gamers is crashing of course.

idk, both? @_@

@ NJ5

Eh? Nintendo is winning because they captured the casual market (and even some people who've never played games before) just like Sony did the last two generations.

360/PS3 will probably end up the best selling 2nd and 3rd place consoles ever, and have a chance at beating some of the winners of earlier gens (everything pre-PSone), so I don't see how the market is crashing...

I did! And I agree with your markers.

I just want to someone who believes in the hardcore/casual game distinction to tell me what Chess is.
