Forums - Sony - [RUMOUR] Sony To Find PS2 Emulation For PS3?

Emulation enables them to do what Microsoft did with the XBox games: Put them up on their marketplace and resell them. Being able to emulate competently keeps a game like R-Type Final, and other games, alive. It would also enable God of War to be on sale.

Unless people are THAT hard set against last gen graphics, it is good to enable people to play older games.

This is another reason not to believe the theory that Sony is holding back emulation on purpose.

As you said, this could be a revenue stream for them on top of an appealing PS3 feature. The only big cost would be the development of the emulator, practically no ongoing costs after that.

I'm not so sure about that. They might be creating a new revenue stream, but they're actually losing money to have a consumer pick up the PS3 instead of a PS2.

I think once the cost of manufacturing the PS3 drops to where they are making a profit, you'll see the PS2 emulation.

Does this mean that Sony doesn't know how to make one that works for all games now they've taken out the PS2 hardware? Or that they are losing so much money that they can't invest in a project like this that won't return any profit?

If they buy it from someone it wouldn't surprise me if they made it a paid download off PSN.

I think they will announce "emulation" when they officially discontinue the ps2.

I think it's a terrible mistake if they're holding back on emulation to keep the PS2 alive... They should be pulling out all the stops to improve the PS3's image, not that of a system which will be practically dead in the next 12-18 months.

Is that what you're praying for everytime you go to sleep at night?

I know you're the kind of poster to have this kind of kneejerk reaction, but please read my post again. I was talking about the PS2 not PS3.

If it was so cheap to do this, wouldn't they have done it already?

The tough part is getting it took work on the hardware... more powerful systems then the PS3 have trouble running PS2 emulators at a good rate...

and those emulators have a sketchy compatability list.

would be nice to be a small company right now that can make a small cheap ps2 emulator and sell it to sony. then retire as you rack in the cash.

What would happen if MS announced that the 360 could play PS2 games??

I doubt they could announce it.  Someone making a PS2 emulator could probably rig one to work on a 360 if they really felt like it... framerates would be horrible though.

What people don't realize is that emulators have to emulate the system.

Its still up in the air whether the 360 and PS3 would have enough juice to emulate the other "half" of the PS2.... AND play games at a good framerate.

PS2 emulators for the PC require the user to have PS2's firmware on a file. If Microsoft distributes that, Sony would sue them. If they require the user to provide the file instead... maybe Sony could sue them too?
