Just found some figures regarding BR disc sales - 0.37m in 2006, 5.67m in 2007, 24.09m in 2008.

Are there any old DVD figures out there for comparison?

indeed though they are shipped... so you do have to knock it down a bit.

DVD came out at the same time... so the rest is comparable though.

5.5 Million, 25.1 Million and 98 Million. (128.6 million a little more then 30 million... even when accounting for store stock.)

http://www.dvdinformation.com/News/press/CES010807.htm

Blu-ray released in May of 2006.... I believe?

DVD released even later.

Now that's a telling statistic.  Good find.

Around the Network

5.5 Million, 25.1 Million and 98 Million.

=============================================================

First two are very similar to what BR has done (5.67, 24,09). However, jump to ~100m next year would be huge for BR.

Ooh, they arent' even using player sales. I just noticed PS3 value.

They're using Player Revenue AND including the PS3... that's even more funny.

Also where do you get 30 million last year?

By my math it's 30 million total.  (as does the article.)

By this timeframe DVD had sold 30.6 Million.  More before you even consider the fact that the movie industry has grown by at least 5% every year.

When you account for inflation of the market... it isn't even close... Marketshare wise Blu-ray is getting destroyed vs what DVD vs VHS.

They're not using value, they're using unit sales.  It's a percent of US households.

Edit: I'm just clarifying for you.  I support your argument, just not this particular instance

you seem to misunderstand.

DVDs "First year" corresponds to Blu-rays 2006.

They released at about the same time.

That 5.5 Million is up against the 360K.  They both had a half of year.  2006 vs DVDs 1997.

Also once again... not countin the fact that in terms of disc market share... more movies are being bought now... then they were when DVD was starting out.

Also of note... DVD wasn't originally sold in all stores like Blu-ray is.  Stores like Wal-mart didn't even carry it until 1998 or 1999.

@Kasz

Nice find.  Been looking for this.

Around the Network

Blu-ray disc adoption rate = 23.43% of DVD in first 3 years.

That's interesting - so BR is one year or so behind in disc adoption? What were the DVD player sales back then, were they huge, or was the attachment ratio much higher?

First year DVD was approx 300k, 2nd year approx 1M, 3rd year approx 4 million (US only)

Oh wait that's players... nevermind... sorry.

But yeah, that's right... people who bought DVD literally switched over.

That would mean attachment ratio was huge - 18 for every DVD player or so. Something's not right here...
