This review of Prince of Persia raises an interesting argument FOR linearity I didn't think of until I heard it:

Pretty much, Yahtzee states that, if you are going to allow for open gameplay (non-linear) either you are looking at uneven difficulty levels, or the level of difficulty remains flat.  I thought this is an interesting argument for linearity and why attempting open gameplay (non-linear/sandbox) isn't necessarily a thing worth doing all the time.  Of course, you have games like Crackdown where you can theoretically take out any boss at any time.  However, by following a certain order, the game is supposed to be easier.

Anyone want to comment on this?
