Forums - Sony - 160GB PS3 has to make a profit for Sony

I think you do probably have to count in some cost for Uncharted as they do lose some money on the sales

All profits from Uncharted's sales go straight to Sony since it's a 1st party developed game. After well over three million sales, Sony has already more than made up the development costs of the game. Now, every copy sold only costs Sony however much it takes to manufacture the disc, which is almost certainly less that $10. Everything else they make is pure profit.

That bundle is a pretty big rip off...considering you can sell the 80 gig drive and get a 160 gig drive, buy uncharted and pain for less money.

If it had backwards compatibility it would be great tho...

A big ripp of when they barely make a profit on it?

well if they are making profit with that bundle thats good news.

Uncharted may not cost them money, it's probably more like a lost opportunity cost, since they could have sold the game on it's own, they gave it away.

Same thing with Pain.

I think it is safe to say that Sony is losing less than $50 off each of these consoles if you don't count the R&D costs.

I totally believe that was the true purpose of the 160gb

i agree with this.

I thought the price estimate per 4GB PS3 was only about the sum value of it's components.

That won't factor in shipping/storing/marketing/packaging etc.

And Uncharted won't sell at retail if it's with the system, so that's a potential (insert uncharted price) lost.... although not everyone will have bought the game as well anyway.

Even so though, it is probably close to breaking even if you take out marketing (which is kind of seperate because most of it would be PS3 game marketing rather than the console alone, or indeed a specific SKU of the console)

Pain has all that extra DLC that could be purchased though.
