Forums - Gaming - SE + MS vs L5 + SONY...why I think it should happen

I don't care too much really about who buys what, I'd just like more J/WRPG's on the PS3
sure there are a couple (like my current fave Fallout 3 and VC, Eternal Sonata etc.) but I'd like a bit more RPG love.

Totally agree, just want to see more of a competitive attitude with RPG developers. Competition is why shooters are jumping leaps and bounds right now. I mean this gen we went from halo to killzone 2, why dont we have that in rpgs?

Still waiting on a New Road Rash and Legend of Dragoon 2...

It is bizarre. Level 5 is nothing compared to S-E
If anything, MS has been investing heavily in S-E to get games, and it is only because the ps3 has such a small install base that S-E isn't paying as much attention to sony, especially with the way things are happening at sony right now.
S-E will come back to Sony, once it becomes more profitable. Don't forget Sony and S-E have a rather extensive relationship, a stronger relationship than most companies. It is just a little excessive to expect S-E, a huge company with a lot of cred, to lose profits over friendship. Exclusivity is for the small companies and the platforms with market share majority.

Yeah, I'm a HUGE Rpg fan myself and I want to see RPGs like they were back in the old days, we had a plethora to choose from, more amazing than not.

We had Ultima, Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, Lunar, Star Ocean, Secret of Mana, Breath of Fire, Bladur's Gate, Fallout, etc.  So many I can't begin to list them all.  They all had something different and they all had to compete, because back then it was all about the RPGs.

Now it's FPS this, FPS that, don't get me wrong I do like FPS games.  But it's crazy that RPGs are where their at, when they should be better, not worse.  (Not saying that ALL the RPGs this gen weren't good, because that's not the case, but you get my point.)

It would be like if they just stopped making awesome FPS games and started a new Hyped Genre.  A lot of people would be pissed, well that's where us RPG fans are getting.

  • 2010 MUST Haves: WKC, Heavy Rain, GoWIII, Fable III, Mass Effect 2, Bayonetta, Darksiders, FFXIII, Alan Wake, No More Heroes 2, Fragile Dreams: FRotM, Trinity: SoZ, BFBC2.
  • Older Need To Buys: Super Mario Bros. Wii, Mario Kart Wii, Deadspace, Demon's Souls, Uncharted 2.

There is definitely more to list that I want, but that's my main focus there.

Have you seen the Versus trailer?

Just a quick note - Sony doesn't have the cash to buy ANYONE right now.

Nintendo & Squaresoft

 Dejá Vù.

IMO, Squaresoft and Playstation 1 was the best team up. Nintendo and Squaresoft were consistantly great as well but RPGs just shot up to the roof when Square made games for PS1. Why cant that magic repeat?

@klarklar

That story you related was debunked months ago. The source was entirely disreputable. There is no proof Level 5 is looking to be acquired. There is anecdotal evidence however that Square is not adverse to that. In a heated console war with a semblance of balance their value is exceedingly high, and perhaps too high. The old saying is true buy low sell high.

Microsoft bought low and got themselves Mistwalker. Despite what some think it was a smart cost effective move. I doubt they are going to get in a bidding war over Square, or attempt a hostile takeover. I also doubt that anyone will go after Level 5. Sony cannot afford it, and Microsoft doesn't need to do that. Better to put more money into Mistwalker.

Why is it always a conversation between these two? It's like no other RPG studios exist in the world. Last gen was owned by Atlus and Nippon Ichi. Why does no one ever throw some irrational "Buy them" love that way?
