Sony has invested billions of dollars into the PS3. Sony is trying to compete with MS but unfortunately Sony do not have as deep pockets as MS. MS invested around 4 billion dollars on each of the XBox and XBox 360 consoles. Sony has invested around the same amount on PS3 around 4 billion dollars as MS invested in the XBox 360. The economic downturn has came at the wrong time for Sony. The games not selling well on the PS3 has been a problem. Some developers loyal to Sony in the past have disappeared, makers of Heavenly Sword, Haze and Lair are all gone.
Hopefully things can turn around in the second half of 2009 and beyond and we will see PS3 and Sony bounce back from the hard times. Where there is life, there is always hope.
