Forums - Sony - Will the PS3 EVER reach 40 million?

They just don't give a shit they haven't given a shit since Sony launched a six hundred dollar console with not games which nobody bought.

Is that why the PS3 has sold faster since launch than the 360 did?

Seriously, the PS3 is never going to hit 80 million, but it's not on its deathbed either.  People have said it was doomed before, on multiple occasions, and I won't be surprised if it stages another comeback.

The PS3 may have sold more than X360 since launch, but u also need to place the fact that in the launch of the X360 the PS2 and the X-Box where still strong among the gamers, and when the PS3 came out, together with the X360 and the Wii began to displace the last generation and start this one. The hard road was done by the X360 . . .

Another fact to talk is the brand "Play Station", it was a very strong band and to have been in mind for 120 million and now be displaced by the "Wii" and account for only 19 million in its second year is something to worry :)

For those who don't think PS3 will ever hit 40 million.

Let me just tell you, even if the PS3 only sold 10.5M in 2009 and 2010 it will reach 40.5M within those 2 years.

I have no doubts that it will sell at least that well for 2009 and 2010.

  • 2010 MUST Haves: WKC, Heavy Rain, GoWIII, Fable III, Mass Effect 2, Bayonetta, Darksiders, FFXIII, Alan Wake, No More Heroes 2, Fragile Dreams: FRotM, Trinity: SoZ, BFBC2.
  • Older Need To Buys: Super Mario Bros. Wii, Mario Kart Wii, Deadspace, Demon's Souls, Uncharted 2.

There is definitely more to list that I want, but that's my main focus there.

LOL, WHAT?
Is this da Joke thread? =))

The question is Will the PS3 EVER reach 100 million?

Anyway, on Topic:
http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php?cons1=PSP&reg1=All&cons2=PS3&reg2=All&cons3=X360&reg3=All&weeks=170
PS3 just need to follow PSP sales, and it will EASY pass 40 mln. by the end of 2010.

BUT, in 2007 PSP didn`t have THAT much amazing games, which PS3 will get in 2009.
PS3 FTW! =)

Every 5 seconds on earth one child dies from hunger...

2009.04.30 - PS3 will OUTSELL x360 atleast by the middle of 2010. Japan+Europe > NA.

Gran Turismo 3 - 1,06 mln. in 3 weeks with around 4 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Gran Turismo 4 - 1,16 mln. with 18 mln. PS2 on the launch.

Final Fantasy X - around 2 mln. with 5 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Final Fantasy X-2 - 2.4 mln. with 12 mln. PS2 on the launch.

1.8 mln. PS3 today(2008.01.17) in Japan. Now(2009.04.30) 3.16 mln. PS3 were sold in Japan.
PS3 will reach 4 mln. in Japan by the end of 2009 with average weekly sales 25k.

PS3 may reach 5 mln. in Japan by the end of 2009 with average weekly sales 50k.
PS2 2001 vs PS3 2008 sales numbers =) + New games released in Japan by 2009 that passed 100k so far

I dont get why people expect the PS3 to increase in sales dramatically. Many of you have said things in this thread that would lead someone to believe the PS3 will sell 14-18 million or more by the end of the 2009 calander year.

For that to be the case the yearly sales would have to have an increase of ~30-40% over 2008. Given what the Gamecube did, that seems silly. Going by trends we've seen in the past, the sales for the PS3 should actually begin to level off, or even decline slightly. A price cut wont fix this, a price cut wont turn ~9m a year into 15m a year.

These predictions for 35 million by the end of 09, and of 40 million by Q2 2010, are generous -- borderline silly. More likely then not, I would think the PS3 will have 27-28m by end of this year, and 35 million by end of 2010. I exepct it to hit 40m in mid 2011.

On the other hand, the 360's first year wasn't competing with the Wii -- and its second year was competing with a very supply constrained Wii.  Also, the 360 was able to monopolize early adopters.  There are many factors but I don't think either situation was massively more advantageous.

Certainly the PS3 will never live up to the PS2; the crown has already passed to the Wii, although many choose not to see it since it's not the "rightful heir".  But never confuse that for OMG DOOMED.

As for the PlayStation brand, I have to think that the damage is already done.  No one is going to wake up tomorrow and think, "Wait a sec!  Playstation isn't the popular thing anymore?  Shock!  Surprise!  I was going to get a PS3 but now I'll get a 360/Wii."

Since when does two years translate into today, and only today. Ignoring the past is no better then penning revisionist history. Consumers do not start each and every day as a blank sheet. They form perceptions of something based upon their first experiences. In this case their first experiences with this console which would be its first year mind you was a console that sold poorly, was obscenely expensive, and had no games for months on end. Whether you understand it or not the saying is true once bitten twice shy. Sony left a nasty taste in the mouths of gamers, and consumers in general.

Those fellow human beings have most certainly not forgotten. So they are not inclined to look positively upon the console. That is a massive problem for Sony, because as they exhaust people that were less harsh in their judgment these consumers that had a bad impression of their console are still walking around with that bad impression justified or not. That is not going to help Sony. They need to find a way to change minds, or win back those they lost, and they lost a lot. That price tag alone lost them a lot of loyal customers who felt exploited.

Bottom line it is hard to change someones negative opinion, but Sony needs to do exactly that, because the blind loyalists and the technophiles will eventually run dry, and they are going to need that larger range that was put off early on. They are not waiting for the price to drop. They just don't give a shit they haven't given a shit since Sony launched a six hundred dollar console with not games which nobody bought.

As usual, Dodece rambles on for several posts and several paragraphs and ends up saying a whole lot of nothing.

Seriously, if the PS3 is on its death bed, then 360 must not be far from it considering that it's only outsold the PS3 by about 2.5 million units since the PS3 launched.

Your entire rant about the PS3 not making it to 40 million isn't even ridiculous, it's just plain stupid. In spite of the bad holiday season, the PS3 will still have sold nearly ten million units this year. It will be around for at least another three years, so even if sales dropped off by 30% and it only sold an average of 7 million per year and died off after the 2011 holiday season, it would easily reach 40 million.

Why is this even in question? It would take a complete and utter collapse for the PS3 not to reach 40 million. You may as well ask if the Wii will ever reach 80 million or if the DS will ever reach 120 million.

Je je je, not a math guy here, if the PS3 sells 10 million and we see a 30% fall in sales, it wont sell 7 million year after year, it would like " 7 Million for 2009, 4.9 million for 2010 and may be the same 4.9 million for 2011", i dont think it will sell less than 5 million a year cause not even the GCN fell that bad (or ... was close :P)

Ah, about "The next generation", i think it will start by the end of 2010, the X360 would have reached theis 5 years cicle and i bet they want to get rid of the RROD, besides that, the more time they give to the Wii competing with those 20th century controls, the less chances they will have to over take that pattern.

@ Lord N:  Much more devastating than my response. Kudos.
