They probably will close some studios or at least make studios smaller. SCE has more employees than Nintendo, to support two platforms with declining software sales (PS2/PSP) and a console which is nowhere near as big as Sony's previous ones (PS2/PS1).

Sony's Electronics division already had massive layoffs, 5-10% of their employees in fact (depending on whether the temp ones were counted under the total). I don't see many reasons to believe that the Games division will be immune to cost cutting. They're too big for the PS3.

There's a chance that Sony decides the games division is untouchable... I wouldn't bet on it though.

Well the first party studios are making money (apparently) so why would they cut down on there profitable division? Hmm business, some of you would run a company into the ground within seconds.

As a whole I'm sure they'll make money, if nothing else due to the heavy hitters like GT5 and God of War 3. But individually, I'd be surprised if no studio was losing money.

......dont understand your logic there, GT5 would make money but then PD would lose money............yeah

Anyway Evolution studios seems the studio liley to get the chop, Harrision did not think very highely of them from the start anyway.

the next transaction is sony buying media molecule.you'll see ;)

If and when LBP crosses 3 million LTD, absolutely.

And it's got a 90% chance of doing that.

Meanwhile, they should ensure Insomniac don't get any ideas about developing on other platforms.

I agree with this, they should buy Insomniac as they are a tried and tested success and same for Media Molecule howver the latter seems a given, Sony see how a game does before they think about purchasing.

How can the Sony 1st parties be making them money when pretty much every HD Publisher hasn't done that well in the past few years? Remember they're releasing on 1/3rd to 40% of the total market and yet they hope to remain profitable when multi-plats have struggled.

Tease.

I didn't say PD would lose money. I said some studios may be losing money. I haven't really looked deeply at that, it's just a hunch. For example, there are studios not making games at all, like the one developing Home. Is it sure that Home will recoup costs?

Is every first-party game successful enough to make all studios profitable?

For one Sony get most of the revenue from first party games, they publish the games and just make games for the one system so that would be a pretty handy reason.

Home is made by Sonys biggest internal studio and I do indeed think they will make money on Home, 3rd party advertisiments will make sure of that along with some microtransactions.

A santa constume would cost how much to code into Home? I dont know, certainly think Sony are making a nice profit from it though.

It's possible Home will be profitable, but I haven't seen any data to make that certain. If they announce the revenue coming in from Home we can get a good idea about that.

All I'm saying is, not all studios are necessarily profitable even if the first party studios as a whole are profitable.

Just look at Singstar Abba, 0.77m copies in no time and it's just one group! Meh thinking about it more and more I doubt any studios are going to get the chop. A singstar for PS3 with the full monty ie wirless headphones etc would also rake in the $$$ so yeah with all that said Home was a very smart decision my Sony. Spend 2 years making Home and then leave about 50 people to maintin Home and the other 200 to make more games.

With the money made from home more employees for Sony and dare I say more studios acquired. :P

I doubt Sony would close any of their 1st party studios. They all make good games, and I mean all of them.

AFAIK:
Naughty Dog: working on Uncharted 2 and maybe Jak & Daxter PS3 (according to IGN)
Zipper: working on MAG, and probably another project
Santa Monica: working on God of War 3, and likely something else
London: camera stuff, etc.
Japan: can't recall, but you know these studios will be the very last to close, if closings happen. (Heavy Rain?)
Insomniac: 2nd party, working on R&C:F 2
Sucker Punch: 2nd party, working on inFamous
Bend: working on PSP Resistance
Guerrilla: Killzone 2.

...etc

Not a single studio there that isn't working on a very likely hit title.
