Forums - Microsoft - 360 tough market for JRPGs: Mistwalker's 3rd game canned

Show me a game on consoles this gen that posts numbers like FF VII, Kingdom Hearts, or FF X and you will prove me wrong.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

JRPG's are a tough market in general. The genre is dying on consoles.

Fix'd.

Yeah, like the JRPGs on hanhelds are getting stealler sales

6 of Square-Enix's RPG's have sold 1 million or more on the PSP and DS. Then again, 3 were spinoffs and 3 were remakes.

Then why isn't TWEWY getting those sales numbers despite being a new game and not a remake of something from 15 years ago.  Don't get me wrong, 500K is good for a new IP from Square-Enix but still...

I think the sales of Dragon Quest IV and V, Final Fantasy III:DS, IV:DS, VII:Crisis Core, and XII:Revenant Wings still show that there's interest in the genre.  Also TWEWY is selling strongly to Kingdom Hearts fans as it wasn't advertised much, also we have to remember that Kingdom Hearts fanbase aren't necessarily DS owners.  Speaking of Kingdom Hearts, I think Kingdom Hearts for the DS and PSP will sell strongly along with DQ IX, they're potential console movers too.

Hopefully Mistwalker will just start making Wii or PS3 games rather than folding... most likely Wii, I'm thinking, if their Japanese publisher wants to make any money in the short term -- maybe PS3 if they've got deep enough pockets for the long haul.

Why would Microsoft publish a Mistwalker game on the PS3?

I'm sure FFXIII and KH3 will sell similar numbers.  For now, I can't.

That is both unreasonable and absurd. That is the worst metric for success in a genre I have ever seen. Wow. You have blown my mind.

Final Fantasy VII had an ad campaign bigger than Halo 3, Kingdom Hearts isn't even a JRPG, and Final Fantasy X was, oh yeah, a Final Fantasy coming off the heels of the most successful FF platform ever!

How about you come up with a more reasonable metric for success, and then we will try to accomodate.

It's obvious the genre isn't what it used to be, but to say it's dying is a bit rash...

=p  Ugh....Show me a JRPG that sold millions last generation that is not FF,KH or DQ.

Anyway, I have a feeling a lot of JRPG fans are getting interested in WRPG's.

Star Ocean Till the End of Time and Xenosaga Episode I both sold over a million copies. Xenosaga Episode II and III weren't so lucky.

You are right about JRPG fans getting interested in WRPGs. I have played Fable II and I'm quite sad that the game is practically unplayable for me now since every time I try to play it, the game freezes on me. That's too bad too because some minor gliches and a mediocre main story aside, it was a great game. I am definitely want to check out Dragon Age Origins and Alpha Protocol if those are good. That said, I will still play JRPGs as well as WRPGs. They both have their pros and cons. I might even try Fallout 3 since that one is suppose to be even better than Fable II.  I might even try The Witcher when the console versions come out next fall.

I didn't want to go here but..

JRPGs have never been that huge of a genre, people! Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest are exceptions in terms of sales, not the rule!
