Forums - Microsoft - Can Microsoft reach the $199 price point with a slim model by next holiday?

Could they really slimline the 360? I mean, in terms of height, it can't get any thinner than the Hard drive, unless they make the next one plop it on top or something really un-aesthetic.

Horizontally, thinner could be done, but how much thinner could it really be?

Even if one were to come out, I'd be surprised if they added in Wi-Fi, or made it slot-loading, since those would easily add to the costs, and to have all this retail for 200 when the Wi-fi itself is 100 is also a dream.

A slim for 299 encompassing all that is quite likely though.

I don't think we'll see an Arcade drop at all this year. They need to fix the Pro and Elite pricing first.

Pro is too much more than the Arcade for only offering a bigger hard drive. And elite is too much more expensive than the pro for only offering a bigger hard drive and HDMI cord. I think MS will fix the pricing to 200, 250, 280 or something like that. And the Arcade will probably stay 200 for a long time to come since there isn't any point in more price cuts. It's already cheaper than the Wii, what are they aiming for next? PSP pricing?

I know that you hate it but MS will DEFINATELY lower the price of the arcade in 2009 and squeeze sony even more . They are aiming for ps2 pricing with the arcade model and they will achieve that AND be profitable at the same time . Isn't that great ??

Why would I hate it?

It's good for consumers.

Fight, fanboys, fight.

Currently playing on PS3: God of War III

Currently playing on Xbox360: Final Fantasy XIII

Currently playing on NDS: Chrono Trigger

Well they could do built in wifi and cost them very little, but they don't because they wanna sucker you into buying the adapter. You'll never see built in wifi on a 360.

No....Another $100 price reduction on the Pro/Premium model is unlikely.

I anticipate a $50 drop on the Pro, and maybe a $30 drop on the Arcade in 2009 - along with the Slim revision.

I know you were saying the slim is imminent but do you think they might hold back now that the 360 has really taken off.

No. Why would they hold off when the Slim is going to reduce prices on the X360? A unified CPU/GPU combo will cost less to produce. Not only this, MS can upgrade 3 years worth of parts to ensure that it works smoother, and has less 'fat' which should see major cost-cutting products on it.

Because of this, a Slim model is not only going to help the 360 sell more units, it'll help MS save more money...Which is a win-win proposition, and MS is sure to release it as soon as possible.

I see your point alright.

I actually thought they might stick with the present model while sales were doing OK.

Kinda leave the slim as another trick up the sleeve?

i highly doubt there will be a an arcade price cut in 2009. after february of 2009 the 360 can't really hurt Sony.

Remember

"By next year at the earliest, Microsoft is scheduled to launch a new iteration of the Xbox 360 with a board dubbed Valhalla. That board will have a single chip that combines both the graphics chip and microprocessor on a single device. This is the kind of technical tour de force that Sony achieved with the chips for the PlayStation 2, a move that allowed the company to significantly reduce manufacturing costs."

Vahalla is being hyped as a bigger cost saver then Falcon and Jasper, though it might not be as high as a $100 saving it will definitely be larger then the $50 of its predecessors.

I hadn't imagined a slimmer version of the 360 could be so close ahead...  I thought 2010 was soon enough. If such a thing does happen 2009 might be the tipping year Microsoft only dreamed of.

PS. It would really be interesting to see how the japanese market reacts.

God i hate fanboys, almost as much as they hate facts

“If you want to build a ship, don't drum up people together to collect wood and don't assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea” Antoine de St-Exupery

+2Q  -2N  (to be read in french)

If they took the Arcade and made that a 60 gig model, made the pro an 80 gig and kept the 120 gig elite they could do a lot without actually dropping a price.

The valhalla is going to be the key as Raz mentioned... I do believe it's possible. Maybe not everything for $199, but they certainly can pull off my list for $249 with a condensed motherboard design and still include wifi and a decent sized hard drive.

If they reduce power consumption enough, they might be able to go internal on the power supply and cut down on the cost of an external one as well. That alone would pay for the wifi adapter in a even swap.

I saw a FLASH 64 gig hard drive on sale just last week for $69 bucks... 2.5" format... for laptops... How sweet would that be? ditch the hard drive altogether and go non-spinning media...
