Forums - Microsoft Discussion - 17% of Xbox 360 games are FPS / TPS

Link.

Out of the 137 games that I have recorded and based on this study, (each title was placed within a genre that defines them), and as I did this I found that there are only 15 FPS titles and 8 TPS titles.

  • FPS 11%
  • TPS 6%
  • Fighting 3%
  • Sports 26%
  • RPG 6%
  • Driving/Racing/Flight 13%
  • RTS/Puzzle 3%
  • Action/Action Adventure 26%
  • Family/Party 6%

Also, 22% of 360's good titles are shooters

(this should say "Percentage of 360 games with a Metascore of 80+ by Genre")

We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that they [developers] want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so the question is what do you do for the rest of the nine and half years? It's a learning process. - SCEI president Kaz Hirai

It's a virus where you buy it and you play it with your friends and they're like, "Oh my God that's so cool, I'm gonna go buy it." So you stop playing it after two months, but they buy it and they stop playing it after two months but they've showed it to someone else who then go out and buy it and so on. Everyone I know bought one and nobody turns it on. - Epic Games president Mike Capps

We have a real culture of thrift. The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games. - Activision CEO Bobby Kotick

I wonder how many of those supposed "Action" titles should really be classified as shooters in some form. ;>

Sports and Racing/Flying still makes up 40% of the library and of the good games though. Add in the shooters to that and you still have the stereotype of the Xbox -- the good games are mostly shooters, sports, and racers -- 65% in fact. If it weren't for the ambiguous "Action/Action Adventure" category they'd have nearly nothing else.

The second link has a Google Spreadsheet with games listed by genre.

I'm not even sure what the differences are. Why is Crackdown a Third Person Shooter when Saints Row is an Action/Adventure?
