Forums - Sony - Does Sony own the IP to the RSX or does Nvidia?

Just because we don't have any information about Sony and Nvidia's contract is not the same as Sony and Nvidia's contract being bad for Sony ...

There really are several ways to protect yourself from the mistakes Microsoft made in their development of the XBox, and I'm pretty sure a company as experienced as Sony used (at least) one of them.

I was thinking about this, and I realised that I had never heard of an answer to this question. So does anyone here know who owns the design and if Sony doesn't own the design how much is it costing them to use it?

i think its owned by sony cause they did pay NVIDA to help them make the RSX. but the RSX is using the 6800 series cause that was what was avaliable at the time so its outdated anyways. i think NVIDA is up to 9000 something, i know they past 8800 series of graphic cards.

The RSX is Nvidia's old series 7 graphics chip. There were two iterations of series 7, two iterations of series 8, two iterations of series 9, and now we're into series 2xx.

That, my friends, tells you how out of date the PS3's graphics chip really is.

Actually we're about into the first revision of the 2xx chips, their release date = imminent.

Tease.

It's a 90nm G70 with it's balls cut, but it's owned by Sony.

End of thread.

Fazz is right--

I should have said G70. RSX is not the exact same thing as G70--it's like a gimpy G70.

PS--I think it's hilarious that Sony calls a graphics chip a "Reality Synthesizer".

f**k the bedroom this is where the magic happens.

the one I find funny is the wii's CPU/GPU names, CPU = Broadway, GPU = Hollywood, it's like the guy that came up with the names had just watched a Hollywood broadway and couldn't innovate enough to come up with cooler names so named it this. XD

You got any snake oil to go along with that?  ;)
Gallons! I also have up for grabs; Statue of Liberty and Golden Gate Bridge as well as London Bridge! Phenomenal!

If you sell me the London bridge, will you also sell me insurance against it falling down?  I've heard some rumors...

Yeah, tech companies do this all the time.  I work for a software company, and the last three updates we've rolled out have been called Bamboo, Bagpipe, and Dumbeldore.  Imagine how ridiculous I feel calling those by name in meetings.
