OutRun Online Arcade Powerslides Into Your Life Next Week

Despite being largely overlooked in favour of louder, faster games, Sumo's OutRun 2 was one of the most joyous racing experiences of the last hardware generation. And next week, it arrives on the current generation.

Sega have announced that OutRun Online Arcade will be released on Xbox Live Arcade next Wednesday, April 15. In case you've forgotten, sorry, PlayStation 3 owners, in North America it's an Xbox 360 exclusive.

In Europe, though, it's another matter, and the game will be out on the PlayStation Network next Thursday, April 16 (of course, in Europe it's out on 360 next week as well).

Sega reveals sleek new OutRun Online Arcade footage

As pumped as we are at the prospect of a current-gen rendition of Sega's Outrun series, it's tough to judge the aesthetics of racing games without seeing them in action. Thankfully, some gameplay footage of the XBLA (and European PSN) racer OutRun Online Arcade recently surfaced in a YouTube video (which we've courteously posted after the jump).

It looks about as fun and arcade-y as you'd expect -- realistic physics are suspended in favor of endless drifting, and cars travel at sound barrier-breaking velocities. Also making a reappearance is the series' blonde passenger, who helpfully squaks asinine remarks (such as, "I want to go far away!") as you maneuver through hairpin turns going 280 km/h. Thanks for contributing, you fair-haired freeloader.

Outrun Brings Its Magical Sound Shower To XBLA, PSN

Great, unexpected news, Sega (and good times) fans: Outrun returns. And it's not the retro OutRun, nor the wonderful Sumo Digital arcade port from a few years back. It's something in between.

Called OutRun Online Arcade, Sumo are on development duties, with the game due to hit both Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network in "early 2009". The game brings the handling and sexy minigames of the 2003 version to the courses of the original, with a dash of HD thrown in for good measure.

No mention of price just yet, but it'll support up to six players online.

why just the EU PSN? I'm lost...

I don't know myself either. All I know is that Sega has been much more supportive of XBLA over the years than PSN. I think Outrun Arcade is actually the first game Sega is publishing on PSN but has already published ports of Ecco the Dolphin, Golden Axe, Sonic the Hedgehog 1 & 2, Sega Soccer Slam, Puyo Pop Fever and Streets of Rage 2, plus enhanced versions of Rez and the upcoming Virtual-On: Ontario Tangram on Xbox Live.
