Comic book fanboys across the globe are all atwitter after fresh reports that Eddie Murphy will play the Riddler in the next "Batman" movie.

The Sun reported today that Christopher Nolan has tapped Murphy for the role in the follow-up film to "The Dark Knight," which is rumored to be titled "Gotham."

The unconfirmed rumor contradicts earlier whispers that Johnny Depp would reinvent the role in the new film, which is slated to hit theaters in 2010.

Jim Carrey played the part in 1995's "Batman Forever." The Sun also says that "Transformers" star Shia LeBeouf has been tapped to play Robin, and Rachel Weisz will portray Catwoman.

Rumors had circulated that that role would go to Cher, 62. Sources say the film will have a cliff-hanger ending, leaving audiences to wonder if Batman survives an explosion at Wayne Towers.

"Chris wasn't sure if he wanted to do another movie, but as soon as he decided to, he got the wheels in motion," an insider told the British tabloid. "Eddie's a fantastic addition. Everyone's excited to see what he does as the Riddler."

Sounds like Batman franchise will make same mistake as Spiderman 3. Too many enemies at once. Too condensed of a story. idk, I have faith as both batmans are far superior to Spidermans 1/2 so far.

He is creating a basic plot for a future Batman movie, but your right. He has yet to sign on to a third movie. As far as we know, The Dark Knight is the last Batman movie for Nolan. As for the Riddler, two names have come up, David Tennant and Brian Austin Green.

Rumors have run wild on who will play the villain or villains in the next Batman movie, but it looks like Eddie Murphy won’t be one of them.

Murphy had been rumored to play the Riddler in the “Dark Knight” sequel, but his rep tells Access Hollywood it’s “not true.”

Other reports have cast both Rachel Weisz and Angelina Jolie as Catwoman, Johnny Depp also as the Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman as the Penguin in the sequel to the box office smash. The Depp and Hoffman rumor began with none other than series star Michael Caine, who plays Bruce Wayne’s butler, Alfred, but Hoffman himself denied it to MTV News.

“No one has talked to me about it ever — never,” he said.

Meanwhile, Alan Horn, the president of Warner Bros., told entertainment site Collider.com on Thursday that the storyline is the project’s main priority right now.

“The story is everything,” Horn told the site. “We’ve been talking to (director) Chris Nolan and what we have to do is get him in the right place and have him tell us what he thinks the notion might be for a great story, but Chris did a great job and we’d love to have him come back and do another one… we are going to be respectful of his timing and we want to get it right.”

But while Batman waits in the wings, some other DC heroes could hit the silver screen soon. Horn said Green Lantern is the “best guess,” but he’d like to see the Man of Steel back as well.
“We’re very anxious to bring Superman back also,” he said. “Probably in the next couple of years.”

In the meantime, fans still can’t get enough of “The Dark Knight” — it sold a staggering 13.5 million copies worldwide on Blu-Ray and DVD in its first week of release, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Nolan has said that a Batman 3 may not be made because: "I have to ask the question: How many good third movies in a franchise can people name?"

That has to be a shot on SpiderMan 3.

Return of the Jedi
Return of the Sith

Spiderman 3 wasn't horrible, just not as good as 1/2.

LOTR: Return of King

...

There are plenty of 3rd movies that are very good.
