Forums - Gaming Discussion - Where the 360 lead came from (the facts)

Lots of people are going on and on about how the 360 is pwning the PS3 in both 2007 and 2008. If you look at the numbers (on this site) however, this is simply not the case. Fact is, for both years, the 360 and the PS3 have sold relatively the same:

2008 (January 5, 2008 - December 6, 2008):

Console PS3 X360
Total
9,026,048
8,990,077

=35,971 PS3 lead

2007 (January 6, 2007 - January 5, 2008):

Console PS3 X360
Total
7,921,241
8,150,782

=229,541 360 lead

2007+2008 = 193,570 360 lead

So as you can see, the 7 million lead did not come from either 2007 or 2008. You can actually see that for both years, both consoles are selling at pretty much the same pace. The 360 lead comes from 2006 and 2005:

2006 (January 7, 2006 - January 6, 2007):

Console PS3 X360
Total
1,367,424
6,907,033

=5,539,609 360 lead

2005 (January 1, 2005 - January 7, 2006):

Console PS3 X360
Total
n/a
1,294,378

=1,294,378 360 lead

2005+2006 = 6,833,987 360 lead

So based on these numbers, the 360 is not really pwning the PS3 in head to head sales. The lead comes entirely from the early release, in 2005 and 2006. As everyone knows, the 360 had a full year head start. In conclusion, at this point in time, both consoles are selling equally. Neither is pwning the other.

I'm sure most informed people here already know this, but I just felt the need to show some of the less informed people about the facts.

...wow.
Thats a pretty good point

What time zone are you in where it is still early September?

Yet, today, America's leaders are reenacting every folly that brought these great powers [Russia, Germany, and Japan] to ruin -- from arrogance and hubris, to assertions of global hegemony, to imperial overstretch, to trumpeting new 'crusades,' to handing out war guarantees to regions and countries where Americans have never fought before. We are piling up the kind of commitments that produced the greatest disasters of the twentieth century.

Yeah, thank you for posting. I'm always trying to tell people this, but they never listen. The PS3 sells alot faster than the 360, but most people just focus on that the 360 have quite a lead over the PS3.

December 7, 2007 (when the 360 had been out a little more than two years) it had sold 14,430,221 million units worldwide.

December 6, 2008 (when the PS3 have been out for about two years, and just 1,5 years in Europe) it has sold 17,876,920 million units worldwide.

They're obviously referring to the most recent weekly gains, which saw a 5.3 million gap go to 7 million in 2 and a half months and shows no signs of slowing - by the end of this year the 360 will probably have sold 1 million more consoles - which will then mean it's lead isn't "entirely" obtained from its' early release.

well as of this moment, as in right now, 2008 still belongs to the PS3. of course i'm aware that the 360 will eventually take over next week.

but right now, they are selling equally. look at the numbers. they don't lie. 2008 sees both the 360 and the PS3 selling 9m each. so they are selling equally as of right now.

by the end of 2008? yeah the 360 will probably take a million lead maybe. but right now, they're selling equally throughout the year.

Sept 13, 2008
PS3 15.44 M
360 20.97 M
(a difference of 5.5M)

Dec 6, 2008
PS3 17.88M (2.44M increase)
360 24.87M (3.9M increase)
(a difference of 7.0M)

The difference will probably be almost 8M by the end of the year.

They haven't sold equaly since early september. Stop getting "right now" and early September confused.

yes, we all know about the surge of sales brought about by the 360 price cut in september. yes, 360 has closed the lead.

but never forget that if you look at the entire 2008, the 360 and the PS3 have had relatively equal sales. focus on the entire year, not just the couple of months.

I totally agree with Whatzername. Why doesn't anybody every bring that up? Of course the 360 will increase it's lead now with it's price cut and momentum, but it's facts that the PS3 sold a lot more it's two first years (and just 1,5 years in Europe if we count the sales up to today) on the market than the 360 did.

So yeah, the 360 has quite a lead (and it will increase for a while), but at the same the PS3 does a lot better than the 360 if you you look at a year to year basis.
