I think its hubris to think that the gamers in the group of people that visit this site really effect sales at all. If they did then the Wii would not be winning! 
Now thats out of the way. I think its pretty simple really. People in general do NOT want innovative gameplay as a general rule. Because to be quite frank, most gameplay 'innovations' simply do not work. If sequels didn't sell, they wouldn't make them. They are the result of choices the consumer makes, rather than the desires of big *Insert media format here* companies to release derivative crap.
