Sounds good except how does fable 2 win game of the year but not best RPG?

I would suggest to share around the awards

Fable won on a merit that none of the other games on the list possessed. The game need not be the master of any one thing, because it was a high performer in all things. Was both accessible, and yet was flexible enough to entertain even the most jaded of gamers. The game was a perfect presentation of genre bending as well. Somehow melding an action adventure with a role playing game with a heavy simulation influence. Pulling all off excellently I might add. Simply put the game won by virtue of being a superior generalist.

The simple truth is nobody actually hates Fable. Everyone can find about enough of what they like to enjoy themselves no matter their premier genre. That said it really is pretty simple. Every game everyone is listing has a dedicated group of players who dislike it small though they may be. Fable won handily, because nobody objected to it.

The staff at Xplay probably passed around a nomination sheet, and since Fable 2 was good enough to be on the list it probably made every participants second or third spot. Tabulate the results, and holy shit since the game did not get a nine or ten spot once the game made it to the number one spot on their list.

Never underestimate the power of a comprehensive package that can appeal to everyone, and is unique enough to get peoples attention. Wait a minute I have heard this story before wasn't there a console built around a similar premise what was its name again.

Dodece,
That's good and fine and all, but then why didn't it win RPG of the year? >_

PS3 Trophies

I personally thought game of the year was going to be a toss up between MGS4 and Gears2.

Well, let's just wait for other places.

my only issue is that The Witcher didnt win an award. The game crushes Fable 2.

Your missing the point I was making. Fable 2 won the award not necessarily by being the best in its primary genre. The game succeeded, because it is a hybrid. The game does not entirely rest within a single genre. Were you to say that Fallout 3 must also contain compelling action adventure content that game would probably have lost.

When they created the awards for each group they asked the question what game is the best within a rigid definition. Not necessarily which game is the best overall. Seeing as Fable 2 did not rigidly define itself within a single genre its probably fair to say it really had no chance, because for lack of a term it was not hardcore in a given genre.

Please do not have me explain the difference between a superior all around athlete, and a star quarterback. Were I to do that, and you still did not understand. Then there is no hope, because the simple concept would simply be well beyond you. To keep it really simple Fable won by being in all around better game. Which does not mean it must be better at any one particular thing.

That's an okay list but Fable II as GOTY? Really?

you sure about this?  i would have assumed they nominated games for genres and then picked the best one out of those games.  while you may be correct in that as a hybrid it works, i highly doubt your analysis of the process is correct.

Solid_Raiden said:It's not so much the choices of opinion as it is the inconsistancy of having an RPG win game of the year but not RPG of the year.

Perhaps they thought it was obvious the GOTY would be the best in its genre and decided to eschew recognizing it in favor of recognizing another superb game? It is a plausible scenario.

Then they would be doing a diservice by not giving the true game of the year the title of game of the year. Why trust someone who doesn't give games what they deserve. Either way it's unprofessional.

No, you misunderstood me. The true GOTY was Fable II; however, X-Play may have felt it was redundant to name it the best RPG because it is obvious that the GOTY is the best in its genre. Instead, they chose another RPG that deserved recognition.
