Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony slashing jobs, leaving unprofitable businesses

http://www.reuters.com/article/marketsNews/idUSTFA00309420081209

8,000 jobs in total thus far. It sounds like these immediate cuts are in the Electronics Division. We'll see how this goes.

Ohhhhhhhhh Hell.

Wonder how far this might go.

Oh no PS3 is dead.

I'm joking but I just wonder how far it will go.

i just hope it's over paid business man and not overworked talented ones.
but as nokia did twice last year it doesn't mean they are failing, since both companies still post huge profits each quarter.

Eep.

Nah, they wouldn't leave gaming. They're making money on PSP and PS2. The PS3 may yet pay for itself, even if only because it helped win the format war for Blu-ray. I think they understand that a change of strategies could do good things for their games division.

This might impact some games development, though.

They're probably just firing all the unecessary management people :P

Why do CEOs get bonuses even when company is making a net lose?

"Sony is also delaying or at least curtailing some of its investments while planning to "downsize or withdraw from unprofitable or non-core businesses." All these moves are meant to cut operational costs by some $1.1 billion in operational efficiencies before the fiscal year closes on 31 March 2010."

Can't say about any specific CEO, but the thinking might be this in general:

In a market downturn, it's best to have a good CEO in charge who can help to minimize losses, if he can't eliminate them totally.  Bonuses help to keep good CEOs happy.

What can they do?
All big corporations are making cuts its the only thing they can do in these times.
