Forums - Gaming - Editorial: Nintendo’s Wii Is The Gaming Industry’s Financial Scapegoat

I agree with the majority here, the article is correct that lots of crap will come to the Wii, but why is this news? Finding good games amongst the crap on the PS2 was like finding a needle in a haystack. Truckloads of crap go hand in hand with the most games, which goes hand in hand with the best sales, which goes hand in hand with the most good games.

How was he owned? The author of the article used the word scapegoat to mean that the Wii was being used as an excuse to produce "cheapskate games and halfwitted ports" instead of actually having to put the money required into a game to make a good one. He didn't mean it as an excuse for losses or poor profits.

Weird how they all missed it, well not really.

Please stop using facts and logic, it inhibits KillZone3's ability to troll.

Vgc mentality, if you arent blindly pro wii its trolling.

Well if it's such a fair and balanced article free of obvious bias why don't you argue the points that various individuals have posted pointing out blatant inconsistances and contradictions? I recommend starting with Happy Squirrel's post!!

I look forward to you pwning everyone since they are obviously wrong in their criticism.

Just to say, Excite Truck is a great game, and I would like to see someone with S rank in every mode. That is hardcore.

QFT

I have to only get 'S' in the two more tracks and it's done. I can't even get an A in the Nebula track. That damn thing is hard.

Ya know. I like how it's been explained the the PS2 did so well because it had huge 3rd party support. And tons of those 3rd party games were crappy. But now, that the Wii is getting 3rd party support, and inevitablely crappy 3rd party games come along with that, it's a terrible thing.

::shakes head::

Yes but also it had plenty GREAT 3rd party games, wii does not have those.

Its just a small difference.

Just curious Killzone3, since you are criticizing the Wii's library, I figure I might as well ask, do you like sports games?

Go to metacritic and compare the Wii's library to the 360's and PS3's. It becomes quickly apparent that the Wii has a growing list of subpar games and relatively few good titles(above 80-85). It's true that SMG, SSBB, and MP3 are coming and all should review very well but it also is true that what appears to be a tsunami of crap will also wash in with it.

Here's what I found when I looked at the Metascores back on June 24:

Wii game reviews on Metacritic.
Of the 63 listed Wii games, 12 (19%) have a rating of 75+, 40 (63%) have a rating of 50-74, and 11 (17%) have a rating below 50. Two (3%) games are rated above a 90: Zelda and Resident Evil 4 (originally released on the GameCube and PS2 in 2005).

PS3 game reviews on Metacritic.
Of the 46 listed PS3 games, 22 (48%) have a rating of 75+, 21 (46%) have a rating of 50-74, and only 3 (6%) have a rating below 50. One game (2%) is rated above a 90: Oblivion.

360 game reviews on Metacritic.
Of the 203 listed 360 games, 88 (43%) have a rating of 75+, 106 (52%) have a rating of 50-74, and only 9 (4%) have a rating below 50. Seven games (3%) have a rating above 90, with Gears of War and Oblivion the highest rated.

Rating..... Wii..... PS3..... 360
90-100 ....... 2 ....... 1 ....... 7
80-89 ....... 4 ....... 13 ....... 49
75-79 ....... 6 ....... 8 ....... 32
65-74 ...... 22 ...... 12 ...... 59
50-64 ...... 18 ....... 9 ...... 47
00-49 ...... 11 ....... 3 ....... 9
Total ....... 63 ...... 46 ...... 203

So each console has roughly the same percentage (2-3%) of 90+ games, but Wii games are less than half as likely to be rated 75-100 as PS3 and 360 games.

And now tell me how many of those games rated above 75 are exclusive to the PS3. Don't bother, I'll tell you: 4. That's it, just 4 (and that's being nice and including NGS) and none are above a 90 rating! By contrast, the Wii has 9 75+ already, and two are above a 90. This is extremely significant -- it means I can own a 360 and have almost no reason to buy a PS3. 360 of course beats them both, and while I'd like to contribute that to the longevity of the 360, I think it's also seen more exclusive titles per month than either the PS3 or Wii has. The 360 is clearly in the lead, although it is interesting to note that the highest rated game of this generation so far is exclusive to the Wii.

I think we all agree that the third party support for the Wii has been lackluster thus far, Sinha. The question is whether this will continue, and I think there is ample reason to believe it will not.

It's almost like the Wii has been out a tiny fraction of the time PS2 has and launch years are notorious for having few good games.........oh wait.......

You really do take bias to new levels. Maybe you should try basing your opinions more on facts and less on desires, the forum would be a better place.

Wii has plenty of great 3rd party games on the way.  Admittedly not much quality 3rd party games have come out so far, but 3rd parties admitted to being slow to realizing the potential of the Wii and got a late start.  So I'm still not sure why the 3rd party support is a negative thing.
