Well... my first game wasn't. My first game was probably Pac-Man or Centipede or something like that.
But, with the Wii expanding the audience to "non-gamers" and "casuals," this quote is going to be true for a lot of people, including wives and girlfriends, adults and the elderly, and the young. And who knows what will become of those people...? Maybe, one day, they'll give a game like Mario Kart or Super Mario Galaxy a spin. And, because we all know that Nintendo "toned down" those franchises, perhaps they'll accomplish enough to not become discouraged, and to continue playing.
Perhaps some percentage of those will move on to even more complicated and involved games.
A lot of times, when reading various points of view on the current generation, I feel that those arguing against the Wii with such anger and fear lack a little perspective. The current existence of "hardcore" games and gamers is largely due to a wave of "casual" games 20+ years ago that welcomed, supported and trained new gamers; we were all "non-gamers" before Pong. The hardcore future of 5, 10, 20 years from now can only be made brighter by the Wii, which is expanding the scope of gaming, increasing the market, and bringing video games solidly into the mainstream.
Someday, the market will support a new wave of "hardcore" games that we probably cannot even imagine today. This will in large part be because the Wii introduced so many thousands of new people to the wonderful world of gaming, so many years in the past.
