Forums - Gaming Discussion - The next generation of consoles going beyond gaming.

I think that this gen already, the console goes beyond gaming. They are already media centers, you can browse the web, watch TV, download movies, send messages, have audio and video chats, browse UPnP shares...
The PSP has skype, a GPS, a camera, it's a tour guide. The DS is a cooking book...

And the best of all is that there will be even more of these with firmware upgrades.

I think it's safe to say that this gen already goes well beyond gaming.

I can't wait to see what the PS3/360/Wii firmware will be in 3 years...

They will know Helgan belongs to Helghasts

Consoles aren't on a tragectory which will turn them into PCs but perhaps they are in a position to answer a fundamental question of usability and functionality. You can't use your computer unless you're sitting down so perhaps having one of the console makers take the lead in this field can yield surprising results for the future.

Computers as they currently are can be called stale. Its the same old mouse/keyboard interface thats been used for over 20 years and perhaps its time for a change to let people interface with them in a much more natural way, like how the Wiimote is a more natural and intuitive answer for a lot of games.

Funny, these past 2 weeks I've played my PC games laid down on my bed more than when I'm sitting. So you are wrong.

The problem of mouse/keyboard is that they're by far the best for gaming, so it's understandable that they seemingly haven't evolved much. But again, you're wrong if you think that mouse/keyboard's evolution is stale. Better ergonomy, more useful keys, optical, and the more the recent laser mice, mouse wheel and laptops.

And I played Red Alert 3 sitting down at this chair like I am now with a blu tooth keyboard on my lap. Its excellent, light, thin and its still inappropriate really for what I want to do with my media PC. Now, try using a laptop while standing up, or while holding your keys in your left hand.
