Keep in mind that they're charging for content, not media. The whole Sopranos series on one Ultra Blu-Ray Zabetsuken Special Disc would probably cost the exact same amount as the whole series on eight hundred DVDs.

I remember when I was a kid.. my Tandy 1000 had an 80meg hard drive with this awesome little OS called MS-DOS.  Oh yeah.  I said, man, how could I ever fill up 80mb in one life time?  I'll never need another one...

it wouldnt cost any more than the whole set packaged together. They have already started to do this on blurays, i have seen them in the store. One disk, smaller, sexier package, at most, a few bucks more and it saves a ton of house space. It would also be better for Amazon, think of the shipping savings for them.
