Why is M$ bragging about this? Because sony dang near had them beat before either console launched. Then in typical sony fashion (as of late) they completely screwed everything up and handed the win to M$. Sony is run by a bunch of incompetant morons. Not just their console division. Any avid MMO players here? I'm sure you guys know what I mean. Most multi-game MMO players hate SOE with a passion.

I started out this generation completely convinced sony was going to stomp M$. After buying and playing both consoles, the only reason I still own a ps3 is bluray. I'm pretty sure the gap between ps3 and 360 sales would be 5:1 if the 360 also had bluray. All you have to do is look at software sales to realize just how many ps3's are being sold to people looking for a cheap, solid bluray player.

I actually think XBOX 360 is winning because it didn't include a built in HD DVD or Blu-ray drive. It kept the cost of the system down, and hence higher sales numbers, and the ability to drop the price lower than the PS3. The PS3 can't go without a Blu-ray drive, because they chose the format to use with the games as well... so now they stuck with a system that has to charge at least $100.00 more than the competition for their console because the Blu-ray drive costs at least that much, and it won't drop much lower than that until this console generation is over.

Therefore, Sony's Blu-ray killed their own console. In the begining, Sony claimed that the inclusion of the Blu-ray drive would be what destroyed MS & Nintendo, and ironically enough, their claimed strength is what will keep them in last place.

That, the fact that not all 360 have HDD and the normal customer dosent know the difference between 360 and PS3,all they see is "1337" grafix

Oh I agree... but the 20gig HDD is actually a pretty cheap upgrade anyway, and it doesn't cost MS $30.00 to add it anyway. But they did the arcade without it because it would allow them to dip the system below that magical $200.00 mark. $199.00 sounds better than $229.00.

Microsoft's saving grace this gen was not supporting HD DVD with a built in HD DVD drive. Everyone thought the external drive upgrade was a dumb move, but it ended up helping them beat out the PS3. Long story short, the PS3 will continue to fall flatter with time because a PS3 can't go without it's Blu-ray drive. The only thing they could cut out was backwards compatibility of PS2 games, and they already did that... and it only got the system down to $400.00.

Taking BC out of the PS3 was STUPID,especally since PS2 was the BIGGEST selling console of last gen, thats like making blue ray players not being able to play DVD,but i understand why they did it.

MS has played good this gen, making the Elite 120 gig and 400$ the same price as the PS3,So when people go to look at console they see 80 gig PS3 vs 120 gig xbox 360 and they choose which number is bigger, unless they are informed.

Right. More than anything though, I think it is the entry level machine that sets the sales bar.

Microsoft: $199.00 entry & $399.00 for the top system

Sony $399.00 entry & $499.00 for the top system.

Absolutely right, and you cant tell any difference in graphics between entry or top system, that is really the selling part for casuals in the 360,who say "i dont want weak graphics with my 200$ system" and all machines graphics look the same and play the game with no installs needed.

Exactly.  Poor Sony really got themselves into a mess.  I think they were just so focused on beating Toshiba & HD DVD they never really thought about what they would do once they won the format war.

Also, the PS2's world-wide dominating success (which may very well never be topped ever) meant that not only was Sony competing against Nintendo and Microsoft, Sony was also competing against Sony.  It's hard to beat the competition when you can't beat yourself.

Oh yeah, and glad to see the larger signature gif back as well... although, I still haven't figured out where the hell I know it from.  I may never figure that one out.

Yeah, and who knows... Sony may be right about that when all is said and done.  If Blu-ray does eventually take over the market (before streaming media gets a chance to destroy it) then the profits from Blu-ray will far surpass the loses they are taking on the PlayStation 3... so maybe in the long run, Sony might just get the last laugh?

and using Blue Ray for games was a good idea,i mean games like GTA 4 and open world games need large amounts of disc space.

(I didn't use the quote thing, it was getting waaayyy too long, lol)

Anyway, I think it is unfortunate, because developers really haven't taken advantage of the space that the Blu-ray disc gives them.  And especially now, since the 360 owns a the larger marketshare, 3rd party dual releases will never get larger than 8.5gb.. it just doesn't make financial since for 3rd party games to be completely re-done for the PS3 when it's just easier to port it over to the PS3 mostly intact.

Whatever the case is, next generation, all 3 console manufacturers will have to use a higher media format than standard DVD, that's for sure.

Sony will no doubt continue using Blu-ray, but I really have no idea what Nintendo and MS will do.

If it were myself making the decision, I would go for HD DVD... it's cheap & abandoned by Toshiba, so the royalties from it would be virtually nil.  Not to mention there are factories that are still stuffed full of unused HD DVD drives that could be bought by MS for 10% of the wholesale price.  And really, HD DVD space per disc is nearly equivalent to Blu-ray, so it just makes sense to me.

The whole school of thought that a console must be able to play disc-based movies was destroyed this generation anyway.  The wii doesn't (and it's #1), the XBOX 360 is a horrible standard DVD player (and it's firmly in 2nd place), and Sony which makes the best Blu-ray player/upconverter in their console is in deep last place.

Heh,good idea it was getting long..

I agree with you about Blue Ray space not being touched with multiplat games, and i really agree with why third party would enhance games for PS3,while the 360 version is 8.5.

Im sure the   Xbox720 will go wtih HD-DVD,Since it will have dirt cheap dvd like you said.

Good job MS....

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD
