Forums - Gaming - 360 vs PS3 - The Battle of Multiplatform Gaming

This thread fails and so does most multi-platform comparison topics because it leaves out a very importan factor: audio. Normally, the PS3 wins in audio because it imploys 5.1 and/or 7.1 LPCM which makes the audio experience more robust and deeper with multiplatform games which for some puts COD:5 PS3 better than the 360 version.

So in the Audio dept 360 allows u to play ur own music while the PS3 doesnt. So I guess every racing games is better than the PS3 version?

(For the newbie: a multiplatform game, aka cross platform, is when a specific game is made for different systems.)

When 360 and PS3 multiplatform games are pitted against each other, using a variety of hardware tests including framerate, resolution, loading times, and graphic effects, the results can be surprising. Being unbiased myself (I do not own 360 or PS3, nor do I plan on buying either) I find eurogamer to be a good source of these comparisons not just because of their rigorous tests, but because they allow you to judge for yourself with screenshot and video comparisons. Ones highlighted are the ones i know are wrong. Bioshock was a tie (some things better on one some better on the other)

ps3 version has way better view distance in gta4, and a LOT LESS pop ups.

Soul calibur also looks better on the ps3.. err i don't wanna start a argument and i don't care if you reply to this or whatever, but this list isn't that correct. If you can visibly see faults (take the gta example) then alll your equipment don't mean shit. The equipment usually means that it's something you'd usually not see by eye.

So they were right on that one

But according to various other reviews, it's at least a give and take for both versions.  Why just fall back on one source with one POV when you have varying POV's from varying sources?

But do they measure pop-up and draw distance which game has more "fog"? No they don't. These aspects of the game are better on PS3 you can SEE them with your EYES. If the 360 version runs 1.2 frames faster but has pop in and fog like we are still in the N64 era, I don't need to hook up some magical machine to see that the PS3 version is better. Using Eurogamer to compare you might as well get quotes from X-Boxfanboi.com

In the red...  Do a little research.  Learning through education will enlighten you.

So let me get this right, because the 360 always ends up having better multiplatform games in terms of graphics/framerate/screen tear/2x or 4x AA as standard you then have to resort to audio?! lmao, desperation sets in with the sony fanboys,

The 360 has fantastic sound, I have a lovely surround setup and 52" 1080P hd tv and hear no difference in sound quality between my 360 and PS3 turned right up, maybe you do but I certainly don't! I know the PS3 does have better sound capabilities but most people wouldn't know this when playing games on 90% of surround sound systems, and don't forget not all PS3 games even support 7.1 audio specially multi platform games.....

If you want to bring audio into this too then the 360 wins hands down again for the simple fact: custom music in EVERY game, something the PS3 STILL can't do very well. I always use custom music when I'm on my 360, playing my PS3 is not the same without me being able to listen to what I want while I play my games.

no of course not..the XBOX360 has the better GPU capability's..and this "OP's post proves it" ..OL brother..

O'l God this is getting rather silly Now. Down right Silly. Most of the people agreeing with this also overlook the most basic problem with these Multi-platform VS threads. they are so one sided toward the xbox360 that there is no way you can take it as other than Bias. POST's just to make the xbox360 look better than it is. Its Quite simple, the game's use more of the GPU function's in the xbox360 than the GPU function's used in the PS3 due to the fact that the more mature GPU function's of the Cell processor's API's was not as well developed when a majority of those Multi-Platform game's were made and also which happens to be..what 3rd party...o'l Brother which also most if not all had not even had that much experience with the Cell processor at all .

The first party, and Second party show where the real test's for Each systems Capability's are. and guess what. Both systems come out in spades, these VS threads are getting just silly for the fact that Each system has its strength's and weakness. but with the Vast majority of those strengths and weaknesses, are moot as time goes on because the more experience a developer has with the hardware the better the results get.

and even then there will be a next generation system released before the majority of the technology in each system would be anywhere near being tapped.

I AM BOLO

100% lover "nothing else matter's" after that...

ps:

Proud psOne/2/3/p owner.  I survived Aplcalyps3 and all I got was this lousy Signature.

Methodology

"Key to our quest is mastery of the video outputs of the respective consoles. Zero-compromise 24-bit full-range RGB captures from the HDMI ports of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 allow us to produce the best comparison screen grabs, while Eurogamer's h264-equipped video player means the best in streaming video (make sure you have that 'high quality' feature enabled). And if all that isn't good enough, the high-def captures in all their 720p 60FPS majesty can be downloaded for playback on fast PCs, Xbox 360 or PS3 via the author's blog where similar content for the technically obsessed can also be found.

Eurogamer did one of their science comparisons on GTA4

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/grand-theft-auto-iv-ps3-vs-xbox-360-special-article?page=4

PS3 didn't win on one aspect. In fact in alot of cases the 360 version ran at 33% better framerate then the PS3 version.

So they were right on that one

But do they measure pop-up and draw distance which game has more "fog"? No they don't. These aspects of the game are better on PS3 you can SEE them with your EYES. If the 360 version runs 1.2 frames faster but has pop in and fog like we are still in the N64 era, I don't need to hook up some magical machine to see that the PS3 version is better. Using Eurogamer to compare you might as well get quotes from X-Boxfanboi.com

Here are some varying GTAIV graphical comparisons...

Finally we have what is partially an issue, and partially a positive to Grand Theft Auto IV on the Playstation 3. Prior to playing the game you will have to undergo a mandatory install of approximately 3.4GB onto the PS3 Hard Drive. It is annoying that we are burdened with this (the XBox 360 version has no install as far as we know), but the positive is that the load times on the PS3 version are actually shorter then on Microsoft's console.

http://www.futuregamez.net/ps3games/gta4/review2.html

Much has been made of the PS3's resolution with Grand Theft Auto IV apparently running at 640p compared to 720p on the XBox 360 version. Side-by-side comparisons though show virtually no difference between the two and if anything, the PS3 game actually looked the better of the two with less jaggies and more visual effects here and there. Either game though is sure to impress overall.

As I had the pleasure of testing both versions of the game, I would like to start with the Playstation 3, since you probably already heard of the freeze-type problems some players seem to experience. Fortunately my console, even if equipped with the 60GB hard-drive, never gave in, so everything went smoothly from installation to multiplayer. Out of curiosity I played the PS3 version for hours, but aside from a few slow-downs during the cinematics I had no freezes whatsoever, so I cannot venture to comment about it. The combination was PAL with PS3 60GB PAL acquired at launch, if anyone is interested. One thing worth mentioning is that it never ran in 1080p, even though this option does appear on the box and my system supports it.
The Xbox version does run in 1080p, but this is not of much help as the rendering is done in 720 and scaled to a higher resolution. Unofficial sources claim that the PS3 version is scaled in a lower resolution hence the advantage goes to Xbox. On the other hand shadows and lighting effects are better on the PS3, so it's a hard decision to choose between the two.

As I have both versions of the game, it is only natural that I compare the two. There is a 8-10 minute install process for the Playstation 3 which does a great job of keeping that version moving, but given that the vast majority of the game streams on both versions, the net result is almost a draw. The Xbox 360 version seems to have a deeper color palette and a little less motion blur/bloom, but the Playstation 3 version seems to have less pop-in and sharper anti-aliasing. Both versions have a few framerate hits here and there, but it never seems to drop the game into unplayable territory. In point of fact I’m going to rate them the same as they are for all intents and purposes equal.

On Sony’s side you will get the more slightly more solid game experience from having a good chunk of data loaded onto the systems hard drive. After the install the PS3 has less lighting glitches and less object pop-ups. The PS3 seems to perform a little better than the Xbox 360 which can be an important to rightfully picky.

If you're wondering about differences between the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of Grand Theft Auto IV, the truth is that there aren't many. The PS3 version can only be played after a mandatory install that takes around 10 minutes, and its load times are a little shorter and less frequent as a result. The visuals, which don't always hold up to close scrutiny but are impressive during typical gameplay, are comparable and feature the same quirks (shadows that flicker, for example) on both consoles.

For those wanting to know which version looks better, the edge goes to the PS3. The textures and framerate are comparable, but the PS3 has far less pop-in. The 360 has richer colors, but the PS3 has better anti-aliasing making it look a little cleaner. Because GTA IV can preload onto the PS3 hard drive, the in-game loads are faster. Don't worry Xbox owners, the load times are rarely more than 30 seconds and don't occur very often. The slight visual edge goes to PS3, but the 360 is no slouch. Either version will do you proud.
