If you want a blu-ray player and a video game, is it a bargain? Maybe, although according to Scientific American http://www.sciam.com/blog/60-second-science/post.cfm?id=black-friday-warning-video-games-wa-2008-11-28

it is a very inefficient one since at a power hungry 150 watts, it uses 5X MORE ENERGY TO PLAY A MOVIE THAN A STAND ALONE BLU- RAY PLAYER. Given where energy prices are going, or to anyone with an environmental concern, it will be a less and less attractive platform for movie watching. It also uses 5x more energy than a Wii  to play a game, just in case energy conservation is something you think about.

For people without HD TVs, who already have or don't want a blu-ray player, and especially for the many gamers who are not allowed to monopolize the main family TV and have to play on a non-HD TV. It's just the boat anchor that made the console so overpriced.

Yeah, we get it already. Sony bad, nintendo good.

Ps3 is a bargain, you will get a great console and a bd-player for cheap. If you buy a wii, you will get a console which can't even play dvd:s. That is overpriced.

Do I think it was the right choice for SONY Inc. Maybe, that remains to be seen. Personally I doubt it.

But as to whether it was the right choice for the loyal gamer following they had so painstakingly built with the PS2 - NO F-King Way. However if you feel proud to have helped support Sony's commercial ambitions with your own money. I salute you for loyalty above and beyond the call of duty and/or sanity.

As a corporation Sony has a strong tradition of insisting on creating and controlling standards and formats. They've attempted to do so in practically every market they've had products. So from their perspective their strategy has been succesful - it remains to be seen the overall impact on their videogame business.

Why people care about DVD playback in their console I don't understand... I would rather spend $20-30 on a cheap DVD player and save wear and tear on my $200+ console.  Much cheaper to replace than your console of choice.

I bought an Toshiba HD-DVD player for DVD playback lol.  My big 5 disc changer DVD player died so I needed another player.  I had several consoles (360/PS3) but would never thought about using them for DVD playback. Cost me about $50 after rebate and got a slew of free HD movies with it too.  And it upscales :P

I don't have room for dvd-player so I really like if you can play dvd:s on your console. So it adds a lot of value for me and many others.

Also, does it hurt to have option to play dvd:s with your console?

I can't wait for 18 months from now when The Colonel announces he's jumped ship again. Hopefully the third time will be a charm and he'll get it right.

I don't believe I said that. I merely said that for those people who are environmentally aware they should know that a PS3 is a wasteful way to play a movie. I am well aware that for the great majority that would not be a consideration. Thats why things are the way they are. If you find it's the best solution for you, be my guest. I think it's a fine gaming console, if somewhat over designed.

I do object to the way that Sony is always trying to cram standards down our throats. This time they won, fortunately they don't always. It went the other way with Betamax, which was, unlike blu-ray (IMHO) a technically far superior product, but the public balked and went for the economy of the longer playing VHS. That time I was on their side since VHS was almost impossible to edit.

And by the way, with standalone DVD players starting at $29.99, I wouldn't think of using a $250 gaming console to play DVDs for cripes sake.

It doesn't hurt to have that capabilty no...

I also don't think it hurts the console if it doesn't have the capability either.

It was a nice selling point for the original PS2 when DVD players were still expensive and it's a good selling point now for the PS3 where Blu-ray players are expensive.  It is not however much a selling point when DVD players reach the throwaway price they are now.  It's much more costly to replace your console due to DRE and other issues like early adopter PS2 owners know well enough.

Yes thats right, after 18 months of PS3 heaven, Ive traded my PS3 in and got a 360 arcade model in return...

Got 2 games, Halo 3 and Gears of war....suggestions for new games will be appreciated....

I only have one pad so far, thats my priority now, to get a second.

And to Sony fans reading....sorry....

Trade a ps3 for an arcade is a big mistake but good for you enjoy it. I would never trade a ps3 for a 360 Arcade unless they give me money back too.

So how you enjoying your 360 Colonel?
