Forums - Gaming - Karl Marx weighs in on the Console War

Sorry, I forgot the link, but here's what he had to say on the console war

A spectre is haunting gaming — the spectre of casual gaming.

All the powers of old gaming have entered into a holy alliance to exorcise this spectre: Sony and Microsoft, Gaming Media and Bloggers, the Hardcore Gamers and Fanboys.

Where are the Wii games that have not been decried as casual by its opponents in HD? Where is the opposition that has not hurled back the branding reproach of boring, against the more advanced consoles, as well as against its reactionary adversaries?

Two things result from this fact:

I. Casual Gaming is already acknowledged by all Hardcore Gamers to be itself a power.

II. It is high time that Casualz should openly, in the face of the whole world, publish their views, their aims, their tendencies, and meet this nursery tale of the Spectre of Casualism with a manifesto of the party itself. To this end, Casualz of various nationalities have assembled on the Wii Messege Board and sketched the following manifesto, to be published in the language of disruption.

The history of all hitherto existing gaming is the history of console wars.

Atari and Nintendo, Sega and Sony, Microsoft and Apple, in a word, oppressor and oppressed, stood in constant opposition to one another, carried on an uninterrupted, now hidden, now open fight, a fight that each time ended, either in a revolutionary reconstitution of gaming at large, or in the common ruin of the contending companies.

The modern High Def society that has sprouted from the ruins of console gaming has not done away with console wars. It has but established new features, new forms of gaming , new forms of arguments between the fanboys in place of the old ones.

Our epoch, the epoch of the pixels, possesses, however, this distinct feature: it has simplified console wars. Gamers as a whole are more and more splitting up into two great hostile camps, into two great classes directly facing each other — Hardcore and Casual.
