Forums - Sony - Sony: "Blu-Ray discs cost too much", lowers expectations on player sales

I think it's turning them on. When you see something that you can't afford, you want it! And once it's cheaper, what do you do? You buy it even if you don't it, but the past high price gave you the impression that the product must be really good.

Blu-ray has been out for over two years, people know what it is, so if they could, they'd drop the price. They simply can't because it cost so much to manufacture, not only the drives but the disc themselves.

@darconi. But all the data is compressed. One of the advantages of blu -ray is the amazing Uncompressed 7.1 Dolby True HD Surround sound. MGS4 is a different game with Surround sound. It feels like your in your own theatre

Btw, the videos on the blu-ray is also compressed. If the entire argument is uncompressed 7.1 sound...well...you just wasted a whole bunch of money.

ONE Of the advantages i said >_>

This is really just to be expected given that this new format is so damn expensive compared to the old one. Digital downloads may win out over blu-ray simply because of price, though the economy has provided a perfect storm for that kind of thing.

Prices are still coming down.
For example, at Wal-Mart they have Blu-Ray players for near $200.
HDTV's (Vizio, and I have one in Plasma form) at 32 inchs are now under $500
Kung-Fu Panda released at $20 on Blu-Ray (atleast at Wal-Mart).

Unfortunately with this economy that isn't low enough. But next year I can see most Blu-Ray movies coming out at $20, atleast at Wal-Mart. Also, Plasma/LCD tvs should be $400 for a 32 inch. That's only what, $100 more then a CRT?

It's just that simple.

....Wait, what? What makes you think that?

The fact that LCDs and Plasmas have dropped $100 over the course of the year in the 32 inch range. Why not another $100?

Obviously, Sony and Panasonic will be above that.

Right now:

Viore 32' LCD $399

Vizio 32' LCD $499

Vizo 32' Plasma $477

RCA 32' LCD $478

Sharp 32' LCD $499

Maganavox 32' LCD $499

Toshiba and Sony still $599

It's just that simple.

Simply untrue. As a relatively early DVD adopter (1998), I remember when many new releases were $30 for a bare bones disc.

They need to advertise Bluray rentals more. I know I didn't really enjoy it until I got Netflix Bluray- and I've bought more movies since then.

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

This is what I plan on doing.

They need to advertise for Blu-ray more, period.  Every HDTV commercial should tie blu-ray together with it and they don't.  I think Sony especially has been way too lax over the last year with advertising for their products, though they have been focusing on the unstable yen more lately.
