Forums - Sony - Sony: "Blu-Ray discs cost too much", lowers expectations on player sales

Download a 1080p movie? Sure lets wait 20 hours for it to download..

There's this thing called compression algorithms. See, you don't have to download a 50 gb blu-ray disc to get the content on the 50 gb disc. The H.264 compression scheme allows for 720p HD movies to be downloaded with a total file size in the 2-3 gb size range (go check torrent sites if you don't believe me). Yes, you got that correct, you can view a 720p movie that is only 1/4 the size of a DVD9 and yes the quality is high and good. Next excuse? EDIT: There are also 1080p movies on the internet that are in the 6-8GB range, still downloadable.

@darconi. But all the data is compressed. One of the advantages of blu -ray is the amazing Uncompressed 7.1 Dolby True HD Surround sound. MGS4 is a different game with Surround sound. It feels like your in your own theatre

The economy is going to be a killer. Notice he said HD sets sales are going down, without these blu ray is useless. I think Blu Ray will not be mainstream for at least 4-5 years, if ever. The environment needed for its success does not exist anymore. And, it will not for a good while.

Too bad almost no one cares.

I think that the main problem of blu ray are:

- Most of people don't see the difference between a dvd and a blu ray.
- Blu ray DISCS (not the players) are way too expensive. in belgium, must be around 25-30€ for a blu ray and 15€ for a dvd.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone buy a blu ray disc... Shelves of them untouched. Its quite depressing really because I'd love for Blu-Ray to take off.

Btw, the videos on the blu-ray is also compressed. If the entire argument is uncompressed 7.1 sound...well...you just wasted a whole bunch of money.

Same. If streaming becomes mainstream in the near future, RIP Blu-Ray.

Blu-Ray is good for some rentals but I have no interest in buying the discs.

i won't start judging blu ray in a negative way. as we all remember when the dvd player came out nobody wanted it cause the price was ridious and everyone was a customite to VCR. once ps2 came out, and dvd players prices drop, they were selling like crack and VCR was abandend

considering the fact that everyone will eventually upgrade to HD, and that standard DVD's can't and will never support HD moives everyone will get blu ray. blu ray cds is actually cheaper to make than dvd cd's, why cause some movies require 2 cd's to ft a movie(ex-Titanic), with blu ray thats 1 less cd which saves money. and they are made out of the same materials so 1 blu ray cd cost the same to make as 1 dvd cd
