It caught the Zeitgeist. It was far from a sure thing but once the use of motion sensing/Wii sports caught the general public imagination as 'a cool thing to have', coupled with the price point, neat design of console, early release of flagship games such as Zelda and Mario, and the fact it was designed primarily for SD TVs rather than HD TVs, it had an incredible edge.
Our Wii is played the least, but when non-gaming friends drop by they always ask to try it... and they never ask to try our PS3.
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
