Gearheads breakout of the "Insane" Asylum!!!

Sun Nov 16, 2008 at 04:26:19 PM EST

Just like a prophet, 3Suns made the call that the Gearheads would be the first to conquer Wave 50 on Insane difficulty when Cliff divulged that Epic’s best testers only made it to Wave 17 or so.  Well true believers, we did it. We did it within the first eight days of the game’s release.  ***I'm not sure about those claiming that they've beaten it on Insane difficulty on the official Epic forums, but this image that I provided is proof enough.  They're basing this on their scores on the leaderboards.

The band of misfits (cue the ‘A-Team’ theme music) consisted of:  Zoso Fan, Infidel, 3Suns, Sai Tyrus, and myself (Blankman).  The core three from Wave 1 thru 50 were: Zoso, Infidel, and myself.  Many thanks go out to 3Suns' boys (Johann and Timothy), PureRage, Razor Hanzo, Degrees, Robbins, Grymmy, Jambi, and Really Doe for filling in along the way. This was truly a community accomplishment! :D

We started from Wave 1 on the ‘Day One’ map and whittled away at this for about three days.  The dirty, dirty Horde didn’t stand a damn chance!  Forget about throwing the kitchen sink at us, the Locusts threw the damn house!  We have it all on film, baby!  Gearheads FTMFW!!!

*BTW: Happy Birthday, Zos!!!  He's 22 today!  We hope that you get everything you wished for!  Steph was making him a Gears-themed cake!  Awesome! :)

The final wave eventually killed our three teammates (Zoso, 3Suns, and Tyrus) on the Regency high ground side.  Without our heavy artillery (Mortar or Hammer of Dawn), that left Infidel and I on the Arcade high ground behind the barricade closest to the Pawn Shop alley.  We managed to plant two Boomshields to prevent the larger Locusts from getting too close to us.  And to make matters even more urgent, both Infidel and I only had one life left since we had both been previously downed two times in the Wave already.  Not only that, but I only had about twenty-eight Boltok pistol rounds while Infidel only had about six Torquebow arrows with twelve enemies coming for us.  There were two Maulers, one Grinder, two Boomers, two riderless Bloodmounts (we had already killed the Beast riders), two Wretches, and three Grenadier Elites.  Fortunately, the Torquebow respawned.  With Zos, Suns, and Tyrus assuming the role of our eyes on the battlefield, they called out the location of every single enemy that was left. After we dropped the Boomer-types.  I ran out to plant the two Boomshields.  That prevented the Wretches and Bloodmounts from mantling our barricade.  They were easy pickings with the Boomshields up.  I managed to plant one of the Grenadiers’ frag grenades, but Infidel got a little trigger happy and wound up setting off the grenade as I walked over to kill the Wretch behind the Boomshield.  With my inadvertent death, that left Infidel by himself with two Grenadier Elites and one Wretch still out there in the hopes of sending us off in defeat.  In true Gearheads’ fashion, Infidel managed to stick the remaining Elites near the ‘Pit" (sewer pipes end) and turned the last Wretch into Swiss cheese with the Mulcher as it made its last desperate attempt at preventing our victory.  Insane on Horde has finally been defeated!!!  We were kissing babies and being congratulated by all Serans, even the Stranded. ;)

What was anticlimactic was the fact that there was no special cut scene, no exclusive character skin, no special gamer pic, or any acknowledgement other than the quick Wave clearance screen (see image).  What the heck, Epic?!?  That left Zos to make the comment that Epic does so many little things right, but completely misses some no-brainer details like these when they make their games.  I added that those like Razor Hanzo that killed those 58K+ zombies in Dead Rising to get the Zombie Genocider at least received an achievement for it.  In conclusion, defeating the Horde could not have been possible if it weren’t for solid teamwork and communication.  Self glory needs to be pushed aside and teammates must be supportive in order to survive.  Those that are only concerned with their killcount eventually wind up compromising the entire team.  Remember, there’s no ‘I’ in team. For the Gearheads, Insane is the "normal" difficulty for us.  We went balls deep on this one and we came out on top.  Now the next big question is, what’s the next map?  We’ve got fourteen other maps just waiting to challenge us. :D

Only took 8 days for them to meet Cliff's challenge.  Thats pretty awesome if this is legit.

Wow!

Tease.

Crazy, though Insane mode seems a bit far fetched.....but who knows! I think the furthest I have gotten with a team so far is wave 20 on the River level. I think the stage plays a huge part.

damn ive only gotten to like wave 18. and they did in only 8 days!!! thats crazy

Nice !

Evan Wells (Uncharted 2): I think the differences that you see between any two games has much more to do with the developer than whether it’s on the Xbox or PS3.

Woah.

My highest so far is Wave 9 on Hardcore (although admittedly I spent the least amount of time on Horde so far).

Hmm.. we should all have a Horde league to record our highest records so far...

I think it's amazing they beat wave 50 on Insane, but at the same time, I don't think it's quite the same accomplishment to beat the levels over a period of days instead of going through all in one go, 0-50 style. Whoever does that first is going to have a feat worth applauding.

LEFT 4 DEAD - November 17th

i cant survive past wave 8 on insane.

Yeah, I had been playing public matches for about 3 days before I realized that you could start wherever and continue playing in a private match.

I am amazed. These guys deserve some special DLC from Epic or something. I think I made it to level 20. Me and a group of strangers were in Jacinto. I was never into team sports, and having my fallen comrades cheering me on ("C'mon Lewis! Nice move Lewis!") was an amazing rush I've never felt before. The Horde mode is a blessing, and one of my biggest gaming highlights ever!
