So I got kind of a internship last year and according to regulations, I had to take the contract to the University for them to sign. The contract lasted six months and, being a master procrastinator that I am, I waited until the last 2 months to actualy do it. They didn't mind. As long as I had it signed, that's all they cared about. So that contract expired like, 4 months ago and they already made another one for me to take there and I was going to wait until the last 2 months again because it didn't seem to bother them or the University the first time.

Well, there's this new law that extends the financial aid for grad students (like me) for the whole time that you go there (it used to be just for the first year). But there is criteria that excludes some people from getting it. That includes people who have internships.

I was telling that story to a friend of mine and the guy (being the evil bastard that he is) kept instigating me to get the money. He said something like: "just get the money for one month, and then take the contract for the University to sign. It's only 250 bucks, they won't miss it!". Well, when I finaly cave in and went to the bank they gave me like 1000 bucks! That happened because the contract had expired 4 months and the money just kept acumulating! Now I'm afraid to take the contract to the University! They are going to know that I've been working for the last 4 months!

What should I do?!

If you're feeling guilty, tell the government (or whoever provides the financial aid) that you made a mistake when applying for the aid and you think you're not entitled to it. They'll be a lot more understanding if they find out first hand rather than through the university, which is what I think you were implying. They also won't think you're a fraud, cheat or crook.

If you're trying to get away with it, at least in Australia, the government will politely ask you to hand the money back over and maybe fine you if they find out. You'd be best not to spend the money for a good long while (maybe a year) until you're sure that the university's records went unnoticed. It's a risk and with government schemes, there's no goodwill incentive for you to be honest and hand the money back. It's really up to you and your conscience.

I can understand the dilemma. I would be honest and upfront, and tell those responsible that you shouldn't have received financial aid before you see the university.

I'm so embarassed to have to admit that I took the money! And also, I gave the money to my mom for safekeeping, and she already spent a part of it!

If I were to keep the money, should I buy a console with it? Remember that where I come from, 1000 bucks it's only enough to buy one console! I've been thinking about buying a DS for CTDS and this may be my opportunity

Just kidding. You should return the money with the contract so you won't get expulsion. Return it, tell they made a mistake at the bank, there bad.

If you go out and spend it and they track the books you got that money, THEN you really broke the law and doesn't help your case you spent all this money knowing it was more than it should.
