Forums - Microsoft - E74 System Error

Okay, on Tuesday morning I was playing Fallout 3, and my 360 froze while attempting to enter the door on the Lincoln memorial.  I can only remember my 360 freezing a handful of times in the 10 months I've owned it.  No big deal, I thought, pressed the power button off and then back on, re-loading the game.  My 360 froze again while tying to enter the Lincoln memorial.  Repeated the process and it froze yet again at the same place.  The 4th time turning on my 360 resulted in 1 red light and a screen that showed "E74 System Error. Contact Xbox Customer Support."  Looking it up online the E74 error is a problem with either the A/V cable or GPU.  My A/V cables were fine and after disconnecting and reconnecting my 360 the E74 screen reappeared.  I finally turned off my 360 and let it sit a half hour.  Turned it back on and it's worked fine the past 3 days.

Has anyone had the E74 error?  Supposedly it can be a precursor to RRoD.  Unlike the RRoD, E74 error is only covered by MS for one year.  Should I be worried?  Every time I turn it on, I expect it to crap out on me. I don't really want an MS refurbished system, but if it comes to that I might just keep the HDD, sell the system and buy a new arcade for $199.

BTW My 360 is a Falcon.

I kinda entered this thread to help with PC problems, but what ever. If it breaks due to E74 and is out of 1 year warranty, I would certainly not advise looking on you-tube for demonstrations on how to give your 360 a RROD, because it would be dishonest or something :P

My only other advice is stay out of that memorial

Bad time to be without the box, there are so many good games out right now, so sorry to hear about your system there.

The time my system RROD, I sent it in to Microsoft, got my re-furb back, then traded that in at Gamestop for a new Elite. IF the error isn't consistent, you can probably trade it in as is to Gamestop, etc, but they do check them before accepting them, so you may have to get your re-furb back.

As far as that specific error, I'm sorry, I really don't know, my RROD and was dead... no error messages, nothing.

Don't worry, MS fixed all the 360 problems. They don't exist anymore ... in Lalaland.

Anyway sorry for your console.

you can request to get your specific console back from them, if you send it in. and if you are at 10 months and having issues, id say call them.

I might end up doing this in early January, if my 360 doesn't go before then.

I also forgot to mention that yesterday there were some serious graphical problems while playing Fallout 3.  I don't think it was the game fault, so it's likely that my GPU is screwed.
