Not meaning to sound like a whiny fandboy of another console, book look at the nominees. That was another one of those contests where they have to nominate themselves and I'm guessing that Nintendo, like they've done in other similar contests, didn't bother applying.

The award is for EU developers only. I think Rare was the only EU based studio that Nintendo had.

No offense to Europe, but winning a European developers award is like winning the special olympics.  There are some good ones out there, but when you're on a list with Red Steel, well, do I really have to go on?

Good on 'em.

Lets keep mentions of N out of this topic from now on, we know Nintendo wasnt there, we know why, so there is no reason to ruin this topic about an achievement of Sonys.

Anyway, good for Sony. Hehe sorry wasn't trying to derail your good news topic!

I wouldn't have chimed in, if it wasn't for: "Come on in and see if we can make this seem like a bad thing too."

Twesterm is in the lead.

I just like raining on peoples parade.

Ok, so I'm not in a bad mood but it's still fun.

if this is European developers, then how did Sony win an award? I can understand SCEE winning something, but not Sony for the PS3...

Help! I'm stuck in a forum signature!

It also had Crackdown (many peoples game of the year so far), Motorstorm, Crush, GRAW 2 and Viva Pinata. It also had Lego Star Wars, while not my type of game it is pretty well recived.

I think if you were to take the NA developers and look at the last year you would also find a similar lack of depth. You would really only have Gears of War and Resistance battling it out for game of the year. Sup Com, Company of Heroes. Can't really think of anything else.

The only area with real depth is the Japanese market as they seem to be releasing quality titles across the 5 main platforms.

Should be noted that "grand prix" means "grand prize". They won the "grand prize prize"?

(Real post coming shortly, just wanted to point that out ;P)

EDIT: And here is said real post.

LittleBigPlanet better win an award next year, the game is ingenious.

Europe is sort of Sony's playground right now, the only place it's really keeping up at all in sales.  Doesn't mean they don't deserve some kudos on well-made games, though.

I'm not trying to rain on the parade, but... software sales have been a bit dry overall, it's a bit touchy of a subject to be weighing Sony's publishing quality by comparison to the light hardware load.

That said, congrats on the award.  Let's see how this impacts developers' views on the PS3.

PS3: 5.51m/51w, avg 108,039/w (up 239)
360: 12.93m/102w, avg 126,764/w (up 625), leads PS3 by 7.42m (up 70k), avg lead 18,725/w (up 386)
Wii: 13.52m/51w, avg 265,098/w (dn 1,102), leads PS3 by 8.01m (up 90k), avg lead 157,059/w (dn 1,341)

If 360 sales stabilize, PS3 sales increases needed to pass 360 by...
01/08: (008w) +875.8%, 04/08: (021w) +344.4%, 07/08: (034w) +219.3%, 10/08: (047w) +163.5%
01/09: (060w) +131.8%, 04/09: (073w) +111.4%, 07/09: (085w) +098.1%, 10/09: (099w) +086.7%
If Wii sales stabilize, PS3 sales increases needed to pass Wii by...
01/08: (008w) +1072.%, 04/08: (021w) +498.4%, 07/08: (034w) +363.4%, 10/08: (047w) +303.1%
01/09: (060w) +269.0%, 04/09: (073w) +246.9%, 07/09: (085w) +232.6%, 10/09: (099w) +220.3%
If PS2 sales freeze, Wii sales increases needed to pass PS2 (as of Mar07, 108.4m) by...
2008: (008w) +4373.8%, 2009: (060w) +0496.5%, 2010: (112w) +0219.6%, 2011: (165w) +0116.9%
2012: (217w) +0064.9%, 2013: (269w) +0033.1%, 2014: (321w) +0011.5%, 2015: (376w) -0004.8%
At +0% it will pass it in 358w, the week ending September 19th, 2014, at an age of 409w (7y44w).
Current age of PS2: 7y37w.

I think you missed my point about Red Steel. It is in fact a terribly game. It was a decent effort, but it was just a bad game. Any place that puts that game up for a serious best of catagory is pretty much a joke.

Also, why would Gears and Resistance ever duke it out for game of the year?

1) Even if you liked R:FoM you can't honestly believe that game is worthy of Game of the Year. It just wasn't that good.
2) They were released in different years you freakin' simp.

And you have have to be kidding me if you honestly believe that the Japanese don't release bad games. There have been plenty of stinkers from there.

Lastly, I never said that NA didn't have studios that didn't release that great of games. What I was implying was that EU doesn't have many studios at all that release good games. Besides the huge uber studios like Ubisfot and EA, there just isn't much quality there.

-edit-
And some recent NA games with depth: Brothers in Arms series, Gears of War, Mass Effect, God of War, Heavenly Sword, WoW, Starcraft II, Metroid Prime, GTAIV, Halo 3, Little Big Planet, Guitar Hero, Civilization,  Tabula Rasa, Oblivion, The Darkness, Overlord, DBZ: Budokai Tenkaichi 3, Boogie.  That's just a small list off the top of my head.  No, no good games come from NA at all.

Good job for Sony! I think Sony should win an award every year just for opening up the European market in a meaningful way.

Congratulations to Sony for some awards =).

edit: I happen to know that even if industry awards really end up meaning nothing, its still fun to win, lol.
