Forums - General - Florida has banned gay marriage

Just out of curiousity....

Are there any other gay ppls here or just Truckasaurus and myself?

I believe that since marriage has been defined as a union between a man and woman, there is no gay marriage to ban.

I think Thomas Sowell says it best:

A man's wife used to be defined as a man's property.  Just because a definition is used throughout history does not mean that the definition can't change.

Black people used to be defined as 3/5ths of a person.

Teenagers ued to be defined as adults.

Relying on a literal definition is a self-defeating purpose, because the definition you are using has probably been modified from some other definition in the first place, and countless other definitions have fundamentally changed as time has gone on, so why should we restrict ourselves to an older definition on a different social institution.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

Come on folks, we all know that if they make same-sex marriage legal, soon it will be mandatory, and someone like mesoteto will have to divorce his wife and take a gentleman suitor instead. It's pretty simple line of logic, if you take the time to think about it.

That said, the Christian right's desire to dictate personal freedoms based on their religious views sickens me.

The dedication you show to any particular console or company is inversely proportional to the number of times you have gotten laid. If you get laid enough, even if you prefer a certain brand, you just don't give enough of a shit to argue about it on the internet.

A black person is defined by a person's descent.

A teenager is defined as someone who is between the ages of 13 and 19.

An adult is defined as someone who is fully developed or matured.

A wife is defines as the female in a marriage.

The things you mentioned are conditions imposed by culture on those definitions, but are not part of the definitions themselves.

According to thier definitions, there can be no such thing as a white black person or a male wife.  Thier definiton does not allow it and they are in fact, oxymorons.  The only way they would be correct is if the definition themselves were changed.  Same thing as gay marriage.  Until the definition of marriage is ammended, gay marriage is not possible, and therefore cannot be banned.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

I just love how the right is all for small government, yet wants the government to tell you who you can and can't marry. What are we, the Christian Iran?

I'm in California and we're fucking PISSED. There are so many protests tonight, and already 3 lawsuits have been filed saying that Prop 8 is unconstitutional, which it is. Our supreme court already included sexuality in our constitution's equal protection clause along with race and gender. It is not legal for a proposition to discriminate against people based on sexuality.

However, even if it passes for good, it only passed with 52.2% of the vote this time. In 2000, Prop 22 (same shit) passed with 61.4% of the vote. That's how fast California is becoming Queer-friendly. I guarantee same-sex marriage will be legal in California again, either in a few months or just a few years max.

And exit polls are saying that it was mostly due to black women and other minorities, who don't see the irony in voting for a separate but equal clause. Also, what the fuck is with Libertarians? 60% of the Libertarians in California voted YES on Prop 8.

I thought "libertarian" just translated to something along the lines of "republican with youthful attitude"
