Forums - General - We're getting closer to energy solutions... New Turbine.

Actually 500 turbines for a power plant would be a great trade off.

Kyros, I think you miss that these are supplemental. You put it on your house. When the wind generates power, what isn't used goes into the grid and comes off your power bill. There's no batteries, it's crediting your account.

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

2 GW / 6 MW = 333 of the largest wind turbines for one huge nuclear reactor

Because of that I said bigger ones and not biggest. 6MW turbines are gigantic and definitely not the norm of what is build today. (Although I would like to know how big the average wind turbine is). The wind turbines I have seen deployed widely in California are definitely not in MW category.

Wind Energy in California

Utility-scale wind turbines are classified by size as follows: small (less than 50 kilowatts [kW]); intermediate (50 to 500 kW); and large (above 500 kW). Small and intermediate turbines make up the bulk of the older installed turbine base, but new turbines installed in the late 1990s are generally 600 kW and larger.

It seems that most of California's wind power is based on old technology.

Example of an under-construction wind farm:

It uses Enercon E-82 turbines (rated for 2 MW), and E-70 (rated for 2.3 MW).

I don't know this will result in the ugliest cities ever. Normally wind turbines go away from many small ones and get aggregated to few very big turbines that should be able to replace thousands and thousands of these ugly little buggers.

I don't know about you, but I'll paint mine pink and put some ribbons and baseball cards in it.

I really don't get how anyone can look at a sleek turbine quietly producing clean electricity and see anything other than beauty.

Yeah, I don't get it.

How long do you think it will take before The Decepticons or Cobra steal this thing to power some kind of doomsday weapon?

Two weeks max.

Solar power game-changer: 'Near perfect' absorption of sunlight, from all angles

A new anti-reflective coating developed by researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute could help to overcome two major hurdles blocking the progress and wider use of solar power. The nanoengineered coating boosts the amount of sunlight captured by solar panels and allows those panels to absorb the entire spectrum of sunlight from any angle, regardless of the sun's position in the sky. No matter which way you look at it, the notion of harvesting energy from the sun to power our homes and businesses is more absorbing than ever.

"After a silicon surface was treated with Lin's new nanoengineered reflective coating, however, the material absorbed 96.21 percent of sunlight shone upon it — meaning that only 3.79 percent of the sunlight was reflected and unharvested. This huge gain in absorption was consistent across the entire spectrum of sunlight, from UV to visible light and infrared, and moves solar power a significant step forward toward economic viability."

Looks like Cobra Commander may be able finish the project in less than a week.
