You my friend need to invest in a nice receiver.

But as for your question you only need a single HDMI port.

Whats a reciever? I am only going to play/watch in 720p since thats my TV's native resolution.

The receiver is the thing that you connect all your stuff to (PS3, 360, cable, whatever) along with any external speakers you may have and then that connects to your TV.

The beauty of the receiver is that they almost always have more inputs than your TV and they are the things that allow you to have surround sound.

And I'll let someone who knows more about this stuff explain further. Just in short-- they're good.

My Dad bought me a thing he called a "splitter" that lets me play SNES, N64, Wii, VHS, and 360 all on my TV. I don't use the VHS though. I think we may be talking about the same thing?

PS3 will upscale PS2/DVD to 1080p over component (but to tell you the truth the upscaling in PS2 games doesn't always look better, depending on your tv - Though it will make all PS2/PS1 games progressive scan which is a bonus over a standard PS2).   But I'd recomend using HDMI because it looks better on most tv's now days.  You only need 1 hdmi port.

I think where the confusion is without hdmi it won't play blu-ray movies in 1080p, but 1080i rather, which is funny because if your tv is 1080p to start with it will automatically de-interlace 1080i to 1080p.

My question was phrased weird. Let me rephrase-

I have one HDMI port on the back of my TV. HDMI cable, how many connectors does it have? Component has 5, so I need those 5 holes to connect it. Does PS3 HDMI only need 1 plug, because thats all my TV has.

HDMI is one plug, it does all the audio and video through that one plug.

^^^ This one.

You only need one cable. Also, don't overpay for the HDMI cable. The PS3 does not come with one, so you will need to purchase it separately. Don't let the salesperson or fanboys convince you that you need the quintuple insulated, 24k gold plated HDMI Monster cable that costs $100. It's digital. The 0s and 1s over a $100 HDMI cable will not, in fact, look or sound better than the 0s and 1s over a $20 HDMI cable.
