Analysts are worthless. I could be an analasist, no problem what-so-ever. And I'd probably be an above average one as well.

They say that Sony "will only maintain between 40 to 50 percent of the market by the end of the current generation", not the PS3. So that includes the PS2 and PSP. Now things make more sense....

BUT THEY say current generation

the ps2 is not current gen

the ps3 is current gen- console
the psp is current gen- handheld

right now those two combined control 28% of the total current gen console/handheld market

the 360 controls 11% of the market

the ds/wii combination controls 61%

in order for the psp/ps3 combination to get to crack 40% of the overall market, they- currently- have to over come a 61.6 MILLION unit deficit.

and that is 40%

to get to 50% we have to add in the 360's 22 million units...


not going to happen - Ever.

Okay... that makes much more sense... Since they are combining the systems.. If it was the PS3 alone... I would say they take 30 to 35% max. That being said I still say Sony slides into the No.2 position overall this Gen.

Uhhhh no, though the PS3 is on the up and up, that is a little extream.....ok really extream!

They clearly aren't talking about portables, because if they did include portables, the PS2 would not ever have broken 50%, much less reach 67%

If they coun't the PS2 and PSX and PSP and the PSpocket and so on then yea Sony is #1 in sales this gen.

Makes sense until you read Leornado1 and scottie's post then you realise it makes even less sense than if they were referring to PS3 v 360 v Wii.  They are clearly not including PS2 and if they include PSP you also have to include DS which makes 40-50% not only impossible but.... well can't think of an appropriate word for it.  The only way this is remotely possible is if they treat PSP and PS3 as one while not only treating Wii and DS separately but actually pretending DS doesn't exist at all.  So it would be PS3/PSP v 360 v Wii.

That is actually a lot, considering that right now, given current hardware (PS3 and PSP) -- that Sony only has 28.6% of sales.
For reference, Nintendo has 60.6%. (That would give Microsoft 10.8%).

Unless of course they don't consider the Wii an actual video game system... (Like many others Grumble Grumble) Of course then you couldn't consider the PS3 a video game system either... and then the only game system is the 360... and Microsoft wins??? No you know what your right... that don't make any damn sense what so ever.
