Kutaragi initially made some references to the PS3's modular features but was referring to Sony's newer SKU's having extra features but has so far been relegated to just the HDD (and even some feature reductions).

Probably because they realized it is generally not needed in the long run of the device, 5yr lifespan, and it doesn't provide a big enough revenue return to invest in.
